Hi folks :)

We've noticed that we are getting quite a few "Midnight Whispers is down for me, anyone else?" posts lately. We understand that you get stressed when you can't get to a fic, and no need to feel bad if you've done a post like that, but it is getting a tiny bit ridiculous, especially as it seems that often MW is only not working for a few minutes or a couple of hours. Might we ask that next time that happens to you, you give it a day?

Now, we are talking about possibly giving you guys a place to post things with a bit more freedom. An open discussion post type thing (always to be started by the mods). This is a search comm, but since we seem to be one of very few active QAF comms left, we figure maybe we should give you a place to say things that don't fit the "search" criteria.

Thoughts?

ETA: I'm kinda loving that so far no one wants anything to change!

Just letting you guys know before someone notices and panics :)

The link to our 4shared fic folder has died once again and has been deleted (Thank you, Tita). 4shared is more trouble than it's worth at this point, and we really don't need it. Anything that was in there should be in Aly's 4shared mirror and/or our Mediafire fic folder, so don't worry, no fics have been lost.

As you were!

Just in case somebody does a double take at the sidebar, here's what happened...

Our Rapidshare fic folder went kafluey. They changed their interface (whatever that means lol) and it screwed up all our download links. (Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] molkogirl_dna for bringing this to our attention!)

The valiant Tita, aka [livejournal.com profile] qafmaniac, in her wisdom (and hard work), has provided us with a new and improved fic folder!

What was once our Rapidshare fic folder is now our Mediafire fic folder :) The 4shared folder has not changed.

As you were!

Thanks again to the lovely members who wished us Happy Birfday and gave us pressies and stuff!!

So yes, real life has been...a real bitch this year, and especially in the last 6 months or so. Court and I are so woefully behind on tagging and stuff...well...go ahead, beat us. We're so tired we'd probably enjoy it. XDDD

To that end, we have a new mod!!!

Thank you to [livejournal.com profile] wouldbedorothy for accepting our crying/begging/pleading call for help!! Everyone be nice to her or she'll...do something evil and lol-worthy to you.

Why, yes, I am tired, and this makes about as much sense as Ted/Emmett right now.

[livejournal.com profile] vlredreign and I have thought and convo'd about this issue and how to apply it fairly so readers can find the fics they want to read, while also abiding by the wishes of our authors, for whom we have the utmost respect.

Well, it's 5,082 posts now... :) Gotta say that today's now-deleted post is the first of its kind that we've ever seen in this community. And dickish as it was, one post out of 5000+ is not even a blip on the meter.

For those who didn't see the post and wonder what's up, someone who rounded up a bunch of fics that are no longer available for sharing in this community, decided she'd create a new username expressly to upload said fics to an individual 4Shared page and then posted the link here in the comm.

As we've said repeatedly, what anybody chooses to save to their own hard drive and share privately is not and cannot be any of our business, but *in this community*, we go by the rules that have been posted. There aren't many, but one rule that is if an author ever notifies the maintainers that they have pulled their fics and they ask specifically that sharing *within the comm* be disallowed, we will abide by that author's request.

So far, the only author who's done so is [livejournal.com profile] jans_intentions. [livejournal.com profile] niquita_gia is the author who notified us today of this now-deleted post and has made a similar request regarding her fic, which we will honor.

As far as Carly's "That Darn Gus" fic, no such request has been made. Apparently, she posted her fics to bjfic.net and they were made unavailable because that archive has been dead for over 18 months now and the current owner chooses not to release it for someone else to step up and maintain. But if the archive came back online, that fic and many others would be available once more.

This should answer any questions regarding the wee bit of drama that is now over and done with. Carry on reading and searching and being the awesome comm members that you all are!

There's a new community tool available: Sort by Poster

From Last Week's LJ News: Have you ever read an awesome entry in a community that left you longing to read more of that user's posts? Now you can view entries by a particular user in a community by appending "?poster=exampleusername" to the end of the community's URL.

As an example, clicking on http://community.livejournal.com/getithere/?poster=court1429 will bring up every post I've made in this comm.

Here's the favor part. ;) You know we're sticklers for subject lines around here to help make searching and tagging more efficient, but that's only been happening for the past year or so. If you know you've requested fics in the earlier days of the comm, if you'd do us the grand favor of copying and pasting the above link into a browser window and substituting your user name for mine, you could very easily take a look at your old requests and edit any that are missing detailed subject lines. This will be such a huge help as we continue tagging backwards.

Oh! And if you're willing to look back through your old posts, if you notice that you got responses for fics that were on bjfic.net and you know of new, working links for your requested fic, if you'd edit in the new linkage, too, that'd be extra fab!

Just wanted to update you guys on a small housekeeping change [livejournal.com profile] vlredreign and I are making. We're now focusing solely on Tagging the requests with as many detailed Tags as we can, and we are not adding to the Memories section anymore.

We are limited to only five categories when putting a fic in the Memories, and editing within the Memories is nearly impossible. Don't ignore the Memories when searching, though, because they were used more in the past than the Tags were. This change is just going forward.

Unlike the constraints with the Memories, there doesn't appear to be a limit to the number of Tags that can be added to a request and editing is easy to do. Obviously, that makes the Tags the more flexible and user-friendly option for organizing and categorizing requests as completely as possible which will, we hope! make your searches easier and faster. We're at around 1000 Tags and counting now. At some point, we hope to have every request ever made in the community tagged in detail.

Hey all :D

It is a matter of manners to say goodbye before you leave. So this is my post to do just that. And no worries, I'll make it quick :)

I was the (active) mod for GIH from December 2006 to June 2009, and then [livejournal.com profile] vlredreign and [livejournal.com profile] court1429 kindly stepped up to help me out when RL got too busy. As you can see from this post, I never found my way back to fanfic and this community, so today I am leaving officially.

Please be good to your two mods, who are doing a really great job, and I hope you'll all have fun with this comm and the fic you'll find in it. :D

Thank you, Court and Red, and thanks to all the members who played by the rules and were funny and friendly and made this place a lot of fun.

Take care ♥

[livejournal.com profile] qafmaniac has worked her graphics magic and resized the header and added some new pictures. She's moved the animations from the Sidebar to the Profile page so, for those without a high-speed internet connection, we hope these changes make your page load quickly. Tita also made us a spiffy new icon (the same one I'm using to post with). It's shareable, of course, if anyone wants to snag it.

Please let us know if these modifications improve the page view and your page loading speed. Thanks!

ETA: I changed the font to Georgia because Google says Georgia "is a clear font developed for reading online text," so thought I'd try it out. Y/N? I have to say like the way it looks and reads *much* better (to me) than Times Roman or some of those skinny fonts that are difficult (for me) to read. So yes, basically, we're indulging my eyes. And they thank you very much. lol
[identity profile] seanmegansean.livejournal.com
I've received quite a few emails and PMs about this issue and have been thinking of how to come up with a solution. Obviously, there are different opinions on whether it is wrong for people to share stories if they themselves didn't write them, and I'm not going to discuss the question here. I want things to be simple and clear for and in this community.

So this is what I've come up with (and I'm going to spare you my thoughts leading to these):Read more... )

As always, if this doesn't please you, or you have better ideas of how to deal with any of this, feel free to leave a comment or send me a PM or an email at seanmegansean at livejournal dot com.

Thank you for your attention, and have a good day :D

Let's please all remember that

a) this community is only for Queer As Folk related searches

b) flaming in the comments won't be tolerated

c) editing your posts with the results of your searches without being reminded by a mod first should be the 'normal' way of things. Editing your posts is actually a vital part of keeping your posting access here.

Thanks.

Hey everyone,

Due to some RL-related issues for both me and vlredreign we're a bit behind with housekeeping this month.
So, if you could please remember to edit your posts after finding what you were looking for, that would make our lives a whole lot bit easier and would be greatly appreciated. :D

Ta!

We have a new co-mod!

RL is keeping me busy and the lovely [livejournal.com profile] vlredreign has kindly offered to help me out with some of the housekeeping over here. Some of you will have already seen her around, but for those of you who haven't... well, don't be surprised if it's not just me reminding you about editing your posts ;b

As always, if there's questions, concrit or ideas, feel free to come forward ;D

Happy Hunting, everyone :D

Hello, everyone!

I'm afraid this is one of those 'reminder' posts ;)

1) Please read the rules before posting.

2) Please edit your post once whatever it is you were looking for is found.

3) Please check the memories before you make a more general request for fic recs.

Also, I'd really appreciate it if you didn't change the settings when you post. There usually isn't any reason to friends-lock your post, and there is absolutely no good reason to screen comments (in fact, it's quite contra-productive to your goals and more work than it should be for the other members of this comm). Disabling comments altogether doesn't make any sense at all and might result in my not reacting to it too nicely.

All the memories (825 entries right now) are here, but there's also a link to them on the profile page and one on the top of the page here. Links to some of the more popular genres are there as well. Hope that helps :D

Since RL was crazy busy the last 10 days, I'm about 30 entries behind on the tagging and adding to the memories, but I should be caught up on that later today or tomorrow at the latest.

Happy Hunting, everyone :D

RL was a bit busier than usual, so I'm a bit behind with the tagging right now. However, I thought a reminded of the rules might be good :D

1) Please only post here when you are looking for fanwork. If you are looking for original pictures, music, episodes, etc. comms like [livejournal.com profile] picquest, [livejournal.com profile] queerasfolkfans, [livejournal.com profile] whatsup_qaf, [livejournal.com profile] babylonvip, etc are the places to post.

2) Please edit the post once you found what you were looking for. Not only with found fics, but also with info about authors, sites, anything that might be of interest to the other members.

3) Please try to be as specific as you can. If you're looking for a genre or something else more general, please check the memories before you post.

4) Do not repeat your requests too soon if nobody's found anything. Also, try to look at least through the last 20 entries before you request anything. Nobody likes too many repeats.

5) Long posts belong behind an LJ-cut.

Oh, and just a small detail, but I'd love it if you could undo any strike out tags you might have used in your posts. I know they are quite handy if your posts contain more than one request, but it's just easier to read the descriptions when they are gone again at some point ;D

That's all for now. Thanks for listening. As always, if there are questions, complaints or concrit, feel free to email me at seanmegansean at livejournal dot com.

Happy Hunting!

I just wanted to remind everyone that flaming (of posts, comments, taste in fic, etc) will not be tolerated in this comm. Usually, I will just delete or screen clearly offensive comments, but if I see that somebody's doing it more than once, I might just ban that user from posting here altogether. As you can probably imagine, I'm not too keen on keeping track of people or deleting entries, so I'd truly appreciate it if we could just all go back to looking for fics or fanwork. Which is, after all, what we are here for.

Happy Hunting, everyone :D

Hello :D

Just a quick reminder of the RULES. Yes, I'm a party pooper. Anyway...

Your searches should be specific. And I know that (sometimes) it can be really hard to tell just what exactly is meant by that.

YES or NO - not at all complete )

Hello, everyone :D

There's a few things I'd like to mention:

1) please read this when you’re a LJ newbie :D )

2) Please keep in mind that this is a community to look for things related to QaF. It is NOT a place to rec your personal favorites. I know the difference can be hard to see sometimes, since more fic is usually better than less fic, but still – there is a difference between a post about, say, Gus!fic, which actually lists ten or more fic which were found in a private journal, and a post just *linking* to another journal. Just as much a difference as there is between a post reccing five gapfillers from 203 and a post just reccing everything that ever came to mind. Again, I understand if you disagree about the distinctions, but I’d like to keep all the entries in here SPECIFIC, and you know, in HERE.

a compromise maybe?? )

Some handy links )

Thanks for listening, and happy hunting, everyone :D

Hi everyone – hope your New Year's was a great one, and that you're determined to read as much fic as last year ;)

There are a few things I'd like to mention - as part of my New Year's resolutions if you like :)

1) The rules will remain as they were. Thank you everyone who voted in that poll the other day, especially those who took the time to comment on it. It is much appreciated :)

2) Those comments also gave me the idea to make better use of the memories function. I’ve started to go through the entries under the found it! tag and put them into the memories (links to which you can find here at the top of the page, here, and on the profile page).

There are 214 entries using that tag already, and I'm afraid putting them all in the memories will take quite a while. So please be patient. Also, please don't kill me if I use a wrong category once in a while - naturally, I am not familiar with all the fics that are found so I mostly work from comments and descriptions. Should there be a mistake, just let me know (seanmegansean at livejournal dot com) and I'll be happy to rectify whatever it is :)

Now, as much as I try to keep my own view of QaF out of this community, I should probably say that I consider B/J canon, i.e. usually all the categories mean "B/J with (kids), in (season 2)...". So, while there is a B/M category in the memories, I will also always call B/M fics AU or AR. Just FYI ;)

Different categories in the memories are )

3) Last but not least: In case you should be bored sometimes/are not sure what you're looking for, the found recs/seeking recs tag might be a good place to start looking. Just saying :D

Happy Hunting everyone! And a healthy and successful 2007! (yes, in that order :P)
