I've been a little lax in my duties lately it seems, and rather than comment to months-old posts asking people to edit their subject lines, I just thought I'd do a friendly reminder for in future post.

Please put a very brief description or a specific detail you can remember of the fic (or whatever) you are looking for in the subject line of your post. (If you actually know the name of the fic/vid/etc., of course please put that.) It's much more helpful and attention-grabbing to people searching the comm than a generic "looking for fic" or "help" plea.

Thanks everyone! Glad to see people using the comm! Blklizard, you're still a treasure! :)

Hello everyone!

[livejournal.com profile] galeandrandy (aka foreverfolked aka Rory Harold) is going through some major RL issues that have left her in a severe financial predicament, and she is asking for our help. She has set up a Donation Drive on her LJ and is offering all kinds of goodies in exchange: word prompt fics, new chapters to WIPs, sequels to already completed fics, etc. Also, [livejournal.com profile] momentsgoneby is offering fanart, and it looks like there may even be fanvids on the way!

Check out her (very impressive) Donation Drive Master Post. Click on the Personal Note she has linked within to find out all about what she's been dealing with. Give something if you can, and maybe score yourself a fandom treat! If you can't, still say hi, and maybe offer a cyberhug :)

I promised myself that I would never do this unless it was absolutely necessary and it's proving necessary lately. If you don't know, I run the website qafcaps.com which provides screencaptures of Queer as Folk and downloads for those captures. I also maintain the old archive of the original Queer Eyes site which is an exact replica of the old Queer Eyes site. That site holds old icons, videos, and fic which may or may not be found in other archives.

I pay $10.95 per month to maintain ownership of the site. I've had the site active since 2009 and I've only asked for help one other time when I was able to keep up payments for 4 months. I've been able to maintain it financially on my own and I will definitely continue to do so. There's no way I want to close it down for any reason so even if no one contributes, I'll figure out a way to make it work. But it would be a great help to me if you would.

I promise to leave a public tally here so that every cent is accounted for and so you know that it is only going to payments for this site. I have another site of mine I maintain, my personal photography portfolio site, but those payments are my own. Again, it is $10.95 per month so payment for a year is $131.40. I'd like to reach that goal to be able to maintain the site for the year. Hopefully, I'm in a better financial position next year to just take care of this on my own but for now, I'm reaching out to the Queer as Folk community.

Thank you to anyone who can help! My PayPal e-mail is: amelia.lourdes@gmail.com.

I will make a public announcement if my goal is reached to let you guys know and if there's any excess, I'll make that announcement known, too, so that it can go into a tally for the following year.

Thank you again, guys, it means a lot!

(Original post here: here and posted with permission.)

Edit: (July 25, 2014) Goal reached! Thank you, everyone! Here's the post with the tally.

Hi, community!

One of our members and biggest benefactors, [livejournal.com profile] qafmaniac, needs some help. She's had some personal crises come up, and, as life usually is, they didn't come one at a time. They piled on all at once. I'm linking to her post. If you can help, please do. Tita is one of the most loving, giving and selfless people I know. Show her some love, if you can.

Post is here

On behalf of your mods, Dot, Court and myself, thank you! And thanks for keeping this comm alive and thriving, almost nine years after 513.

Hi folks :)

We've noticed that we are getting quite a few "Midnight Whispers is down for me, anyone else?" posts lately. We understand that you get stressed when you can't get to a fic, and no need to feel bad if you've done a post like that, but it is getting a tiny bit ridiculous, especially as it seems that often MW is only not working for a few minutes or a couple of hours. Might we ask that next time that happens to you, you give it a day?

Now, we are talking about possibly giving you guys a place to post things with a bit more freedom. An open discussion post type thing (always to be started by the mods). This is a search comm, but since we seem to be one of very few active QAF comms left, we figure maybe we should give you a place to say things that don't fit the "search" criteria.

Thoughts?

ETA: I'm kinda loving that so far no one wants anything to change!

Hello, lovelies!

A recent incident with comments coming up screened made your mods realize that we needed a new rule (one we actually thought we had already). I've added it to the profile page, and it reads as follows:

Do not post from your own journal; come to GIH and post DIRECTLY to the comm. We ask this because posting from your own LJ means you are posting using your own settings, and can therefore cause issues such as locked posts, screened comments, weird fonts/colors, etc., which we then either have to fix or ask you to fix. Let's save us all some time, 'kay?

Don't worry, we're not going to kick ya out if you forget, or even yell lol. We do realize many of you may be used to posting from your LJ, but please make your best effort to remember the new rule. After all, why wouldn't you want to come here? ;)

Much appreciated,
Dot, Red, and Court

ETA: Making this post sticky for a bit because I don't think everyone got a chance to see it.

2½ years ago a group of friends decided to work together on a site called TrueQueerLove.
[livejournal.com profile] gerri71 already had a forum with that name, but we decided to find a new forum solution and add an archive, so I set up the site TrueQueerLove for us to run together.
So much out of our hands happened to the different members of the group and due to this I was left running TQL basically on my own to then finally, at the end of June this year, take over the ownership of TQL as well. I hope to keep TQL a place worth visiting for both members and guests and to do this it's become time for a major upgrade of TQL. The upgrade will not change the look or feel, but will bring better usability, security and some new features. As this is such a massive upgrade, I’ve decided to close the site while working on it and this means that TQL will be closed from Wednesday October 10th to its reopening on Friday November 2nd.

Raise your hand if...

....you have a layout made by [livejournal.com profile] qafmaniac (Including this comm!)

....you've watched or downloaded one of her many vids

....you've uploaded her icons, gifs or wallpapers

*raises hand*

My beloved Tita has stepped up time and again for many of us. And she never asks for anything in return.

And right now, she needs our help.

Please, if you can, help keep the layouts up, the vids available, the icons shareable.

[livejournal.com profile] qafmaniac has been, and still is, an integral part of the Queer As Folk fandom. Help me show some love, k?

First of all - I really appreciate this community. It has helped me many times and I have found some really great stories through other people's queries as well. Kudos.

I was wondering though, is there some way of asking for help with a specific story (rather than, say a genre) without giving away the entire plot in the process? It's great to jog the memories of those who can help, but kind of takes something away from the story-telling for those who may not have read it yet. Perhaps starting with a general description and then spoiler'ing the details that are obviously major plot points? A clunky solution but maybe somebody has a better idea.

Moderators: if this is not allowed, please delete, but I'm hoping maybe it can help the comm in general.

With the permission of the lovely Mods for this community [livejournal.com profile] vlredreign and [livejournal.com profile] court1429, I am posting this PSA.

Pardon if this is something you already know.

When requesting an author friend you so you may read their f-locked fic, please enable *your* account email so we may write you back. Sometimes there are problems with your account which result in us not friending you - year of birth not showing, empty journal, whatever.

Thanks!

I’d planned to address this a week ago, but real life issues got in the way. And sorry, but real life will trump comm and fandom every time. So, here it is, my final response to the events of the last few weeks.

[livejournal.com profile] vlredreign and I have thought and convo'd about this issue and how to apply it fairly so readers can find the fics they want to read, while also abiding by the wishes of our authors, for whom we have the utmost respect.

Just wanted to update you guys on a small housekeeping change [livejournal.com profile] vlredreign and I are making. We're now focusing solely on Tagging the requests with as many detailed Tags as we can, and we are not adding to the Memories section anymore.

We are limited to only five categories when putting a fic in the Memories, and editing within the Memories is nearly impossible. Don't ignore the Memories when searching, though, because they were used more in the past than the Tags were. This change is just going forward.

Unlike the constraints with the Memories, there doesn't appear to be a limit to the number of Tags that can be added to a request and editing is easy to do. Obviously, that makes the Tags the more flexible and user-friendly option for organizing and categorizing requests as completely as possible which will, we hope! make your searches easier and faster. We're at around 1000 Tags and counting now. At some point, we hope to have every request ever made in the community tagged in detail.
[identity profile] court1429.livejournal.com
A member was searching for graphics and mentioned she'd been taken to task in the past for requesting help with non-fic searches. I can't speak for past rules, but this is not the case anymore. All categories of searches are welcome at [livejournal.com profile] getithere.

Here are the non-fic Tags and Memories categories we have created due to recent requests (and more will be added as needed). )
[identity profile] court1429.livejournal.com
A reminder to Posters and Fic-Offering Commenters: Posters, whenever someone offers to email you a fic, *please* immediately update your entry to ask that anyone else who wants the fic to PM or email you or the commenter instead of "me, too, please"-ing in the comments. And Commenters, when you offer to email, please remember to add in your comment that if anyone else would like a copy, to PM or email you for it.

Red and I don't ask this to be all strict and bitchy, but to save ourselves from having to read 76 or 37 or however many "me, too" requests there are JUST to make sure there's no wankery happening. Even when we're not actively chiming in, you may be certain that we read each post and each comment. Plus, you know, I get all bummed out when I think there are going to be a ton of recs for fic and *maybe* there will be a few I haven't yet read! only to find it's requests for emailed copies. ;(

This is an almost 100% wank-free community and we sincerely appreciate everyone's efforts at keeping the comm such a friendly and helpful place, but on rare occasions, a comment is posted that another person takes exception to and then others might jump in and then: wank and hurt feelings. Again, hardly ever, but we still have to make sure of it. Thanks in advance for helping us out with this.

This week on Insane Journal, we posted the entries for the Fall Challenge. They can be found here: QAF Scavenger Fall Challenge Master List

You can use the Insane Journal Open ID to check them out if you don't have a journal there. There's fic, videos, and graphics. Enjoy, and make sure you leave some love for the participants!

I've been offline for awhile and have just been getting acquanted with the 'new' website layout/colors...it looks awesome.   I'm not sure if this is just my computers' settings (although I never had the problem before), but the sidebar fonts are super tiny.  I ordinarily don't need glasses to read, but I had to magnify the sidebar to read the titles.  Can this be fixed or if it's my own problem can someone tell me how to fix my settings to read them? The rest of the website is fine, easily legible for me.  Appreciate any assistance, because I know there are some interesting links I wish to investigate on the sidebar.  Thanks ever so much!

Here you will find RSS links for the IJ side of fandom.

There are a lot of fics available on IJ that you may have missed, which would be ever so tragic...

A couple of days ago, one of the members asked to pimp an upcoming cross-fandom fest. After speaking with [livejournal.com profile] court1426, I agreed to copy her post into a post here.

Now, understand that this is not a diss on the lovely , not at all. She merely asked to call attention to a writing fest. Things like this equal new fic for us, so I say it's a good thing.

Here is the original post.

I was contacted by the mod of that comm this morning. She informed me that it seemed as if commenters that went to the comm site to nominate QAF were "ballot stuffing", and possibly had no intention on writing for other fandoms. I did mention to her that that was an assumption on her part, that we have a lot of writers here that write not only for QAF, but other fandoms as well. The issue is this, as laid out by the mod: There were to be five fandom nominations per participant, not just one. Also, the participants would then be matched to two fandoms. You can go here to read the fest rules.

As a result of this, only Queer As Folk challenges and/or fests will be mentioned here from now on.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

Morning, all.

I spoke with [livejournal.com profile] irishka1205 the other day, whose fic is posted at one of the Geocities sites under the name Irina. She informed me that she is in the process of moving her fic to faniction.net, and here:

Irishka's LJ fic site

She's still working on it, but her QAF fic will be hosted there, as well as her SPN fic.

One down, dozens to go!
