getithere | Mod Post: Wrapping up the wank

I’d planned to address this a week ago, but real life issues got in the way. And sorry, but real life will trump comm and fandom every time. So, here it is, my final response to the events of the last few weeks.

The initial incident was about 3 weeks ago, when a poster asked for quality fics. A conversation took place regarding this, and up to a point was very civil. I’ve seen comments from people saying that it was anything but, that new writers were being targeted. Not true. Someone else attempted to explain what they meant, and that thread died. Then a comment was made that set off the explosion. It wasn’t in defense of any fic, it was a comment designed to start a fight. Others came in and jumped on the bandwagon, and the fight was on. Then, it got personal. This was explained in the mod post here, and I’m not going over that again.

The second round came because of a similar post, where fic labeled “badfic” or, more specifically “crackfic” was asked for. Again, recs came in, discussions were had, and the same person decided that once was not enough. Fight #2 broke out. Instead of walking away, the commenter engaged everyone that did not agree with her. And so, I took action.

I’ve seen comments where we, the mods, made our post after the fact. Yes, and no. One, the post was several days old when we made our post. At the time, there were maybe 20 comments. And two, after we posted, while checking the comm, we noticed the post had exploded to nearly 80 comments. We went in and…round 2 was off and running.

This comm had been, up to the last month, as wank-free as any comm could be. While posters and commenters sometimes were at odds, there were only a few times where we went in to calm things down. It was never anything like this. This was…insane.

I stand by the decision I made to ban the instigator, and I’m not backing down from it. Could I have been less…vocal? Nicer? Perhaps. But I said what I said, and there it is. I’m not cleaning it up, I’m not making it pretty. I was beyond pissed off, and I’d had enough. You don’t have to like my decision. I don’t care. It was mine, and I own it.

This comm is for people searching for fics, vids, pictures, anything having to do with Queer As Folk. You can call it whatever the hell you like: good, bad, crack. Some may not like it, but hey, I don’t like cheese. Damned if I’m gonna get in a fight with someone who does.
