I was scrolling through the pics over on qafcaps.com and found something interesting. Season 1 episode 10 is the one where Justin is showing Daphne around the loft. Brian opens the partition between the bedroom and living area and stands there naked while griping at Justin for all the noise he's making.

There have been a lot of fics written where Justin didn't know that Brian bought his sketch. But in image #99 in the background behind Brian is the sketch that Justin made of Brian lying naked in bed. It's propped up on the table next to the bed with a glass in front of it.

So is it canon or fandom that Justin doesn't know Brian purchased the sketch. At Babylon following the fundraiser, Daphne mentions that someone bought one of Justin's sketches. No mention is made of who purchased it. That's the only time I can remember the purchase being mentioned in the show. So... how could Justin not know Brian bought it when the sketch is in Brian's bedroom?

ETA: Seems to be a bit of both: canon that Justin knew Brian had bought the sketch since it was on display (at least in 1 episode) in the loft while Justin is living there, and fandom that Justin doesn't know Brian bought the sketch because it's never mentioned in the series after episode 6.

You are so right! I am sure it is canon that Justin doesn't know that Brian bought the sketch, but I could be wrong. I have watched each episode so many times that it seems close to impossible that I could have misinterpreted that storyline. Could that have been a slip -up by the director or producers to have the sketch hanging up in that scene? The only time I remember it is when Brian was admiring it while in bed with a trick.

I'm sure I've read more than one fic where Justin discovers the sketch hidden somewhere in the loft. If the sketch is visible in the bedroom in ep. 1.10, then you can only assume that between Brian buying the sketch and 1.10, Justin discovered the sketch off-camera.

I think it might have been dropped as a storyline and never touched on again. I've seen fics where Justin finds out about it years later or even months later for one reason or another. I'll have to go look for that scene myself to double check because it has been a while since I've seen it but it would leave for an interesting gap filler, after all in canon the most it was discussed was Daphne pointing out someone bought it and Brian gazing at it while on the receiving end of a blowjob.

Could lead to an interesting scenario either way. It also didn't stay in that location long so it could be that it was simply forgot about or someone had placed it there for 'filler'.

Maybe that's why no one discussed it before? I mean after all, I don't recall anyone discussing the fact it was sitting on the nightstand. :D

At the time it was purchased, Justin didn't know. Stands to reason that he found out after the fact, ie, after the scene at Babylon. Brian is there with them when Daohne mentions it, then later we see Brian with the trick from the comic book store, staring at the art on his chest of drawers.

ETA: BTW, Brian buys the sketch in 106. That leaves 4 episodes, or, if you like, several weeks in between the art showing up in 110.

Besides, regarding Daphne, there is a 6'-something naked gorgeous man standing in front of you. Are you really noticing what's behind him?

No, he doesn't. IIRC, the exchange went thus:

Brian: "If it isn't the cast of ZOOM!"

Daphne: "We're celebrating. Justin sold some of his art."

Can't recall what Brian says to that, but he walks away after.

So it's pretty much fanon that Justin didn't know.

Michael: "Who'd buy that?"

Emmett: "Probably some desperate queen who's always pined for you."

Brian: "Ted, how thoughtful."

I think the reason why it was considered fanon was simply because it was never discussed in the show so people naturally assumed that because Brian did a lot things but never spoke of them to those it affected, this was yet another demonstration of that.

After all, can you imagine that conversation between the two? Or the fact that Justin never bothers to mention it to anyone? It's an interesting plot bunny, no doubt.

Canon: Exactly what you describe seeing, Brian left the sketch out in view in the bedroom for at least a little while. Justin, who was living in the loft while the portrait was in plain sight, would have to be blind not to know that Brian bought it. Whether or not either one ever told anyone else, like Daphne, is unknown.

Fanon: Fanfiction writers invented the idea that Justin never knew who bought it, and other fanfiction writers followed suit. (The idea seems to have originated because Justin was apparently in the dark about the purchaser at first.)
