[identity profile] brians-desires.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] getithere

I'm a little tired of how no one seems to ever stand up for Brian or be a real friend when his so called family blame him for all of their problems.

I'm looking for a fic that has Brian standing up for himself or a new character that becomes friends with Brian, a true friend. It can be either man or woman it does not matter. Brian always thinks he doesn't need anyone to stand up for him but he does need someone to be by his side and support him without judgment.

Even Justin frustrates me sometimes. He's always saying he loves Brian but lets everyone verbally abuse him and never does a thing about it.

Thanks in advance for any stories. Hope that someone besides me has thought of this.

We have NEVER discouraged discussion of a fic search, and often discussions are held here regarding a fic search or what have you. And that comment was not me berating or dissing the OP. Trust me, you'd know it if I did.

My comment was for one reason: oftentimes, new people to fandom form their ideas not from the show, but from fanfic. This makes being a part of fandom a very limited experience. How can you form an honest opinion of Michael if you've only read anti-Michael fic? You can't. How can you form an honest opinion of Justin, when all you know is the fanon version of him, which appears to be a cross between an anime character and a girl? You can't. If I'm gonna rec fic, at least it's gonna be as IC as I can possibly find, and sadly, there's only a handful of writers that fall into that category, for me. I suppose I could rec the dreckitude that sometimes passes for fic, but that's not me.

Amen.

And to add my 2 cents, the OP didn't just request a fic. She shared her perception of the show...or fic she'd been reading...couldn't tell, it was not clear. And said she was tired of it. Tired of the other fanfic writers? The show writers? Either way this post included meta and there's valid reason to expect others will share their perceptions, too.

No one was being hostile, just sharing their opinions.

I am sorry, I had the wrong impression. I did not know you could discuss things....over the past year I have used the site, I have seen people, who were chatting away about their opinion on the show/characters, told to go to a discussion page, w/ a handy link given.

Between that & constant reminders that its search only, again, my mistake, I just hadnt seen anyone discussing things, freely. I also had never seen anyone question if they were watching the same show, etc. But like I said, I am new to this fandom on LJ. I have seen many people discuss being afraid of posting searches, in private...so that was my motivation.

I never considered your motivation of drawing a person out... the idea that people are in the fandom via fics, more so than the show...it just never occured to me. I totally get your motivation now too.

I am new to the LJ stuff, but not the fandom. I watched the first ep as it first aired, but saw the drama on the Showtime boards, and never looked further...till last year.

I recently had a co worker watch the boxset & she loved it, but saw it so differently, I made a comment wondering if we watched the same series & it really bugged her. So I had a personal bias. Just like how I now have to work with someone who hates B & J together, thinks Justin needs to go find the pretty violin boy again and Michael was better off w/ Dr Dave.

....so trust me, I know about accepting different opinion, no matter what asshattery they may be! ;)

Sorry again!

We don't mind people discussing the fic that's being searched for. Oftentimes it leads to fics not initially considered that may fit the searcher's request. What we don't want is a discussion to devolve into wank. And that's easy to spot, actually.

I was never privy to the Shoboards, but I heard about them, and I'm glad I missed that bullshit. I can and have argued with the best in this fandom, and I usually come away with a different understanding. In fact, it took almost 3 years for me to come to terms with 513, and I finally get it. And, most of my opinions about 513 were ill-formed by the fic I was reading.

I didn't watch the show until just after the finale of S5. I swallowed S1-S4, and watched S5 on Showtime when they re-aired it in January 2006. At that time, everyone was still in shock over the ending, and LJ was full of people discussing the show.

I've actually asked several times, right here and in discussion comms if people watched the same show as me. Sometimes because I'm floored, and other times, like this time, to see if this was a fic-based opinion or a show-based one. And Michael with David?? Justin with Ethan?? Hell to the no!

No one should be afraid to look for a fic. I restrain myself more than you know over some of the requests. And it's hard. When I see people looking for fics of Brian abusing Justin, knowing what Brian went through with Jack, I want to scream...or throw up. Especially since we see Brain try so hard not to be Jack.
