A true friend for Brian
Mar. 19th, 2010 10:47 pmI'm a little tired of how no one seems to ever stand up for Brian or be a real friend when his so called family blame him for all of their problems.
I'm looking for a fic that has Brian standing up for himself or a new character that becomes friends with Brian, a true friend. It can be either man or woman it does not matter. Brian always thinks he doesn't need anyone to stand up for him but he does need someone to be by his side and support him without judgment.
Even Justin frustrates me sometimes. He's always saying he loves Brian but lets everyone verbally abuse him and never does a thing about it.
Thanks in advance for any stories. Hope that someone besides me has thought of this.

Date: 2010-03-20 03:24 pm (UTC)MANY people post requests that are so out of left field it isnt funny, but I havent seen them chastised for it.
If people feel like they will be ganged up on or mocked, its really going to hurt this community. I am sure there are a gazillion and 3 other sites better suited for debating the show.
For the record, I dont agree w/ the OP's opinion....I thought Justin was Brian's little pitbull, BUT I do hate the way that so many of Brian's friends do the passive/agressive, presume guilt first, blame crap... And no, Brian being from an abused home would very likely just accept the shots.... just add a few more bricks to his emotional walls.
Any one should be able to post & request fics, no matter what the subject, w/o comments from the peanut gallery.

Date: 2010-03-20 04:04 pm (UTC)I'm not the type of person who lecture anyone, and I don't think at all that an amazing comm like this can suffer just because someone has felt free to express her point of view on the show, exactly the same thing Brian_desire has done, don't you think?
By the way sorry again^^

Date: 2010-03-20 04:35 pm (UTC)No, a few opinions will not take down such an awesome site, but then everyone should be able to post their opinion...and this will no longer be a search site, but discussion. I know the OP posted their opinion, but it was to define what she was looking for & others do feel the same, as replies show. Like I said, I dont agree w/ the OP, but to each her own.
Almost daily, I see requests that are so outlandish, OOC, etc... but they are never critiqued & if the replies are non search/found related, the mods steer them back or ask them to stop.
Posting a search and being told that a mod (or anyone) questions if they even watch the same show or cant tell fanon from canon is just way harsh.
I'm sure the mods & vets of the site have private talks about the It must hurt to be that stupid requests, but in public, as long as rules are followed, all requests should be encouraged.

Date: 2010-03-20 04:58 pm (UTC)About the fact that people could be scared for the opinion of someone else, well it seems to me,if I may, that you're a little overacting. Nobody has insulted her, nobody has bashed her, it was an emotional instinctive thing, at least for me, but if the person who has made the post has felt somewhat bashed by me I will apologie asap, be sure.

Date: 2010-03-20 07:01 pm (UTC)My comment was for one reason: oftentimes, new people to fandom form their ideas not from the show, but from fanfic. This makes being a part of fandom a very limited experience. How can you form an honest opinion of Michael if you've only read anti-Michael fic? You can't. How can you form an honest opinion of Justin, when all you know is the fanon version of him, which appears to be a cross between an anime character and a girl? You can't. If I'm gonna rec fic, at least it's gonna be as IC as I can possibly find, and sadly, there's only a handful of writers that fall into that category, for me. I suppose I could rec the dreckitude that sometimes passes for fic, but that's not me.

Date: 2010-03-20 09:38 pm (UTC)And to add my 2 cents, the OP didn't just request a fic. She shared her perception of the show...or fic she'd been reading...couldn't tell, it was not clear. And said she was tired of it. Tired of the other fanfic writers? The show writers? Either way this post included meta and there's valid reason to expect others will share their perceptions, too.
No one was being hostile, just sharing their opinions.

Date: 2010-03-21 01:35 am (UTC)Between that & constant reminders that its search only, again, my mistake, I just hadnt seen anyone discussing things, freely. I also had never seen anyone question if they were watching the same show, etc. But like I said, I am new to this fandom on LJ. I have seen many people discuss being afraid of posting searches, in private...so that was my motivation.
I never considered your motivation of drawing a person out... the idea that people are in the fandom via fics, more so than the show...it just never occured to me. I totally get your motivation now too.
I am new to the LJ stuff, but not the fandom. I watched the first ep as it first aired, but saw the drama on the Showtime boards, and never looked further...till last year.
I recently had a co worker watch the boxset & she loved it, but saw it so differently, I made a comment wondering if we watched the same series & it really bugged her. So I had a personal bias. Just like how I now have to work with someone who hates B & J together, thinks Justin needs to go find the pretty violin boy again and Michael was better off w/ Dr Dave.
....so trust me, I know about accepting different opinion, no matter what asshattery they may be! ;)
Sorry again!

Date: 2010-03-21 01:56 am (UTC)I was never privy to the Shoboards, but I heard about them, and I'm glad I missed that bullshit. I can and have argued with the best in this fandom, and I usually come away with a different understanding. In fact, it took almost 3 years for me to come to terms with 513, and I finally get it. And, most of my opinions about 513 were ill-formed by the fic I was reading.
I didn't watch the show until just after the finale of S5. I swallowed S1-S4, and watched S5 on Showtime when they re-aired it in January 2006. At that time, everyone was still in shock over the ending, and LJ was full of people discussing the show.
I've actually asked several times, right here and in discussion comms if people watched the same show as me. Sometimes because I'm floored, and other times, like this time, to see if this was a fic-based opinion or a show-based one. And Michael with David?? Justin with Ethan?? Hell to the no!
No one should be afraid to look for a fic. I restrain myself more than you know over some of the requests. And it's hard. When I see people looking for fics of Brian abusing Justin, knowing what Brian went through with Jack, I want to scream...or throw up. Especially since we see Brain try so hard not to be Jack.

Date: 2010-03-21 03:57 am (UTC)I absolutely agree with that. I mean, when I see MPREGs being requested, I don't post a comment asking them if they live in the same universe as I do, because where I'm at, men don't often get pregnant and blow a baby out their ass (or however that works in MPREGS; honestly, I never bothered reading that ridiculousness). I think that would be bashing their fic preference in a big way.
They're not asking for our opinion of their preference or viewpoint of the show, they're asking if anyone if familiar with a fic that would suit them. For example, I'm not a big fan of the Justin character at all, but it's just an opinion of mine and I have my reasons. Do I read anti-Justin fics? Nope, sure don't, but if I asked for one and got a reply asking if we're watching the same show because my they disagree with my reasons for disliking the character or just don't see it the way I do, I wouldn't really see how that is helping me in my search and I'd think that would be something discussed in a different type of community.
However, I definitely agree that no one was being insulting or hostile toward the OP, and she even posted a comment saying she wasn't offended, but a new searcher could absolutely take it that way.
I've also noticed certain discussions being sent away while others are not, so I can see how that can be confusing. But nonetheless, I've never been treated in a negative way here before and I request quite a bit, so I'm not complaining at all, just simply stating what I've seen. But then again, it's obvious people perceive things in very different ways, as we see here. Just wanted to put my two cents in. :)

Date: 2010-03-20 11:43 pm (UTC)I always love to hear how other people feel about the show and i know not everyone interprets it the same way. This was my first post in the community and I had no idea how to word it.
To a point I do feel that Justin defends Brian but towards the end of the series I feel that he let everyone else get in the way of how he felt about Brian.
Thanks for the stories that were mentioned.

Date: 2010-03-21 11:07 pm (UTC)And I totally agree with you throughout the whole 5th season I was wondering if it was for real. It seemed so OOC that it seemed more like fan fiction than than QAF.
The whole Justin realizing that what he wanted was a monogamous relationship and a family it's what really threw me off. He seemed to have come to terms that with Brian it was going to happen at a slow pace.
And Brian doing the bet with that one guy to see who slept with the ten hottest guys was something he would have done a couple of years in the past not now.
I hated that in the end they didn't just really talked about what they wanted and stop listening to their friends.
Oh well i guess this is why we have all these wonderful authors to give us an alternative ending.
