In the fic I'm looking for Justin was raped and Brian Retires? and takes Justin away to start a new life without dealing with the family. I think they ended up with a house by a lake. Brain did loads of DIY and had his own construction company. Hope someone remembers it.

DIY is Do It Yourself (http://www.diy.com/diy/jsp/entrypage/homepage.jsp?_requestid=349906), meaning rather than getting tradesmen in to do carpentry or plastering or building in your home, you do it yourself.

It's a particularly UK centric term I think. It's a common thing for people to spend a fortune on DIY tools and wood, cement and ceramic tiles to improve their home themselves. I think the American term for it would be Home Improvement?

No, it's still DIY here. There's even a whole TV station devoted to it, aptly called "the DIY Network."
