Fanon to Canon 'ugly naked guy'?

Writing something for Credence, this thought occurred to me. As I'm sure most anyone knows, there are quite a few things that were said or stated in QAF fandom / showtime message boards by fans that inadvertently made it onto the show in one way or another.

Just two of my favorites that I recall are 'Zen Ben' and 'Brian knocked up Sunshine'.

So if anyone can recall, 'the ugly naked guy painting', was this an actual fandom thing before Justin says it when the painting is being taken away, or was this on the show before?

EDIT: FOUND ANSWER. Okay I was confusing myself by thinking too much about it. Justin does not say exactly 'ugly', and you'd think me watching it 3 times before asking would've alleviated this question. But then I began wondering if he said it as 'ugly' elsewhere or if it was purely fanon. It is only purely fanon. Justin does NOT say 'ugly'.

Thank you!

This was on the show. I have the vid where Justin mentions the 'naked guy painting' as it goes out the door. It's the same episode where Justin finds out that Brian is the 'Concerned Citizens For The Truth'. It's in episode 314. You can see it here:

If I recall correctly, Justin also refers to it in season one when he gives Daphne "the tour". He says something like: "Wait til you see the picture of the naked guy."

Glad I could be of help. I didn't know that some of these things kind of came from fandom as I've only been in the fandom for little more than a year now.

I only remember this scene so well because right then, they have Brian and the stratigically positioned plant make an appearance ;) And because I always keep thinking: "I can't imagine Brian going to a gallery picking out that painting." Ha, maybe it was one of Lindsay's early works, now that I'm thinking of it...

I can't comment on if any of these painting are good or not. I know shit about art and I'm one of these people who "don't know art but know what they like". It still seems odd to me that while the rest of Brian's interior design is very sleek, modern and practical, he'd go to a gallery and come home with a 10' painting. He just doesn't seem like the guy for decoration.

Anyways... the lack of continuity doesn't bother me so much, actually. Besides, I'm not sure if someone who is ambidextrous could actually paint (artistically) with the both hands to equal mesaures. I'm left handed and there are a few things I can only do with my right, so...
But that's not what I was going to say. What bothered me even more is the timing on the show. For the life of me, I can never figure out how much time passes within or between episodes. Sometimes it's days, sometimes it's one day and sometimes it's weeks. Like the whole of season 4 seems to span Mel's pregnancy while ep 511 seems to go over at least a couple of days.

Just FYI

The painting is actually by Attila Richard Lukacs (http://www.attilarichardlukacs.com/home.php). He was primarily painting male nudes at the time, but a quick peek at his site shows that he seems to be into abstracts right now.

They used the real painting to shoot the pilot, and then, fearing that it was too risky to leave it on the set where it could easily be damaged (or stolen), they replaced it with a copy.

I didn't think the house was meant to actually be in West Virginia...I always took it to be Justin exaggerating, not actually meaning that they were in WV but that it felt like they had been driving so long that they might has well have been. Am I being stupid? Is it actually meant to be in West Virginia?

"That being said, I just LOOOOVe how COWPIE forgot about the whole, 'ambidextrous' remark in 101. I suppose like many things, (WV) 'it's only a half an hour outside of Pittsburgh' we're too overlook their inaccuracies and love the show anyway."

I'm with ya on the whole ambidextrous thing and I think I've even mentioned that before on these boards.

Also, I always thought the WV comment was taken way too literally. I always felt like when Justin made that comment, he was just being a smart ass about it taking so long to get out to the house...not that they were actually going to WV. You know...kind of like saying "When you said you had something to show me, I didn't think it was in buttfuck, Egypt" or something like that.

I know this is not the kind of reply you were looking for, but I just couldn't help myself (just another form of Tourette syndrome I guess :P)

Justin didnt say 'ugly naked guy'.... just 'naked guy'. (3x14) Just as he referred to it in S1, giving Daph the tour, so the actual line wasnt taken from the fans.

Ugly naked guy is from Friends...which was an ongoing joke on that show for the first few seasons.

I think fans just remember it as ugly naked guy because Friends made that phrase a part of the pop culture lexicon. But the painting was never dubbed ugly on the show...

What newer fans can't comprehend is how PASSIONATELY every single detail of each episode of QAF was scrutinized and hotly debated. ad infinitum, in the intervals between episodes. Thus "minor" details such as messed-up timelines and outright errors became huge issues to us rabid fans. Watching QAF as it unfolded each week was, necessarily, a much more intense experience.

It's my opinion that the show, when watched in its entirety at one go, makes a viewer more tolerant of gaffes and lapses in characterization. An example of that is the difference in how fans accepted season 5. Original fans, watching in "real time," were mostly outraged, furious, absolutely LIVID about the ending. Newer fans seem to be more accepting and tolerant of the ending, and of CowLip.

Yes. This.

[identity profile] sandraj60.livejournal.com 2012-02-27 03:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm still trying to recover from a virus so I'm limited on how much time I have to read before my eyes cross, but I had to respond to this. I am a new QAF fan who practically watched the five seasons in one sitting and I was "LIVID" about the last episode. I was so upset I took to my bed in tears, cursing the day I started watching the first episode. I will say that I am more tolerant about time-lines but only because I watched the episodes once and sped through non-bj parts (sooo not interested in seeing the other characters being intimate). I could have cared less about the inconsistency of the time lapses.

Now the inconsistency of the characters, I noticed right away. I know Justin was bashed, so I gave some leeway to that, but the episode where he leaves Brian after he gets syphilis for whoring around and then the later episode where he tries to force a trick on Brian at his bachelor party almost gave me whiplash. WTF???

"the episode where he leaves Brian after he gets syphilis for whoring around and then the later episode where he tries to force a trick on Brian at his bachelor party almost gave me whiplash."

That was so frustrating, wasn't it? It seemed like Justin had some sort of personality disorder.
J: "I want you to commit to me and only me!"
B: "Okay, let's get married."
J: "YAY! Okay, now go fuck that guy over there."
B: "No, because I have committed to you and only you."
J: "YOU SUCK! I am leaving for NYC tomorrow. C-YA!"

Arrgh.

LMAO!!!

I thought I was the only one that picked up on that. I was so angry at the writers for that last episode. There was no rhyme or reason to it other than to break them up in the end. Justin goes to New York and Brian continues as Mikey's aging Club Boy hero. Thank God, Mikey is happy!

It was almost as if the writers made a parody of Brian acting like the "breeders" he always mocked so that we could appreciate him going back to the way he was. They never wanted Brian to grow up.

The last episode was frustrating in a lot of ways, and no, it's not a favorite of mine to watch. Yes, Justin went to New York. But the second part of your statement is only true if you decide that it is. And I don't know why you would. Because Brian was dancing? Alone? And then surrounded by friends? Missing Justin from every pore but dancing because life goes on and the thumpa thumpa goes on and he and Justin would go on.

That's what I take from it :)

[identity profile] moonbrightnites.livejournal.com 2012-03-02 03:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I completely agree. I was SO annoyed that they ruined Brian's life, stripped him of both his son and his lover... but that was supposed to be okay because he was right where darling Michael wanted him, permanently installed at Babylon and dancing alone.

Thank god for fic because otherwise, it would be unbearable.

I dont think newbies can ever comphrend just how long we had to wait in between seasons and how in the dark we were. Yeah, we had the Sho.boards, but this was pre spoilers and te web was still pretty void in material.

I'm sure thats why we over analyzed everything...because its all we had.

Damn....we had patience and we were not rewarded for it with the finale!

[identity profile] sisamyska.livejournal.com 2012-02-28 07:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I compleatly agree with you! I´m a newbie that watched all 5 seasons in one week or so almost one year ago and I had to see first 2 episodes of season 2 at 3 a.m. at school night just to know that Justin would be ok. Can´t imagine what I would do if I have to wait in standard time.

[identity profile] kavousi-redux.livejournal.com 2012-02-29 05:09 am (UTC)(link)
Even worse than standard wait time... it was 6 months between the first 2 seasons...and a whole freakin year between the rest.

At least for me, I truly didnt know if Justin survived the bashing... and when they started promos for S2, Randy wasnt shown, to keep the suspense going.

No great industry reports or spoilers either...so you just had to wait.

[identity profile] lanbeo.livejournal.com 2012-03-01 07:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm a new fan, but I have to say I do not tolerant season 5 or CowLip at all. What they did to Brian and Justin's characters that time were crime. There was no common sense from season 4 to season 5. I so understand why Gale and Randy got angry with them.

We new fans are such a poor things. We couldn't discuss every episode like old fans who watched each week. Now it's too late. *sigh*

[identity profile] hilsongirl.livejournal.com 2012-02-27 08:43 pm (UTC)(link)
i am such a newbie i had no idea Zen Ben was fanon before canon. Are there other examples of that? i'm dying to know what else was taken from the message boards :D
