Does anyone remember the first time Brian called Ted "Theodore"? I was reading a fic and suddenly wondered it. If I'm not wrong, it's in season 3, when Emmett asked Brian's advice for his "fuck date".

And why did Brian called Ted that name. It's his real name or it's a special, old way for the name "Ted" ???

Just some funny thought. Hope you guys know it. Thanks.

EDIT: some awesome info in comments. Thank you guys, I've learned a lot.

Theodore's a little too formal around here. People use nicknames all the time especially if they're names that they've used for years. Emmett uses "Teddy" when he's being affectionate with him and Brian uses "Theodore" in a mocking, playful way. But "Ted" is a nickname for Theodore.

My husband's given name is Teddy Lee; people are always asking him what Teddy is short for or just calling him Ted or Theodore on an assumption. Why his mother named him a nick-name is beyond me but, whatever, that's his name! :-) He LOVES to tell people (well women) that is name is Teddy, as in Bare ... quite the kidder ... NOT! :-)

Ted is traditionally the nickname for "Theodore". I believe "Theo"is becoming more popular as a nickname instead now...

It is also a nickname for Edward. Go figure.

As to Ted being short for Theodore, have you never heard of Theodore Roosevelt? Check this:

Yes, actor Robin Williams played Theodore Roosevelt in Night at the Museum.

Love that movie.

The late Senator Edward Kennedy was also known as Ted or Teddy. Which is also a nickname for Edmund, Edwin and Edgar.

This has been a very interesting thread. Thanks for asking the original question, lanbeo!

Leave it to Brian to make someone's given name sound more like an insult. :-)
