I do use Calibre. Bur when I dl mobi files or PDFs, I do what Altsunthinkable said. Open the folder and move the files to my Kindle.

When you do that, just moving from your hard drive to your kindle via the usb cord, are you actually moving the file? Or copying? Do you still have a copy of the fic in mobi on your hard drive? I retain a copy when I export via calibre.

It's like using a jump drive or external drive; you have to copy if you want it to stay on you computer. You have to think of it like moving a file from one location to another on your computer because it does not stay if you "cut" but if you "copy" it will.

When I select files on my hard drive (C:) to back up on my external drive (E:), they automatically copy since it's going to another drive, so there's a version on each drive. When I select files in one folder on my hard drive and put them in a different folder, they automatically move so there aren't two versions on the same drive. If that makes sense. I wasn't sure if the same would hold true with adding files to an e-reader (equating the reader as a separate drive, hence automatically copying, so there's still a version on your C: drive). That all made sense in my head, but looks confusing written out! ;\

I can't speak for my new computer with Windows 7 because I'm still holding true to my old operating system, because I got used to XP in which I just copy/paste or cut/paste everything. That way I knew exactly what files were doubled in drives and what files were not. I could drag/drop, but that was the same as cut/paste. It did not leave a "backup" behind.

That does not mean that other operating systems follow those same guidelines or have different features....so I can't rightly answer you. I get what you are saying even though it can sound confusing when trying to explain it properly. It could leave a copy on the harddrive and external, but the only way to know for sure is to check after doing it. *shrugs* I wish I had more information, but old habits are hard to break and I'm still happily copy/pasting, cut/pasting my way around my new computer. (Mostly because I'm super anal about organization and have everything sorted into multiple folders!)

I'm using Windows 7 for the past few months since I got a new computer and it's not that difficult to get accustomed to. I say that as a not very tech-smart person. The first few days were aggravating, but after that, no big deal. It's a lot easier to get used to Windows 7 from XP than to get used to Word 2010 from Word 2003, I'll tell you that much! jesus christ. lol

I do copy or cut and paste for a few things, but one thing I've noticed with Windows 7 is when I click files and drag to my external drive, the icon that's moving across my screen is a file folder with the number of files I'm moving on the front and a little text box that says "copying to e:file folder of choice" (i don't know the exact words) or if I'm moving things around within folders on my C: drive, the text box says "moving to docs/file folder of choice", so that's an extra way to check yourself, too.

I copy into the Kindle file. So one in my eBook folder, one to the Kindle folder. When I use Calibre, I upload from the file folder to the Calibre Library. So all the mobi conversions I've done are there.

I got an email from a member who wanted to know how to download and add fics to her kindle and I was giving her the steps when I realized I wasn't sure about how to put the files on a Kindle since I do everything via calibre and she's not using that software.

As far as Calibre, I can't love that program enough right now. (I still need to figure out what tags I want to make to organize it even more.) I even started reformatting all of my files into .epub files because they work so much better than .pdf files. <3

I have nothing on my kindle that I haven't converted to mobi. I try to avoid pdfs as much as possible.

I've set up tags and figured out how to work a calibre plug-in that will then read the calibre tags and create "Collections" on the kindle. I believe I read that the Nook will read your tags without all that other business, which seems more efficient.

It's too bad the Nook and Kindle people couldn't have gotten together and made one super bangin' device. Each has features I really like and a couple I'm not so crazy about.

I agree, there's things now that the Kindle has/does that make me wish I had one, but I still remember what brought me to the nook in the first place. (Though I wish they would stop working on creating games to play on it...really I have a DS for gaming purposes or others have iphones, ipods, and countless other devices now for gaming. I bought an e-reader for just that: reading.)

I did break down and get the Kindle app for my computer and ipod because there were a few things I wanted that were not available to the nook. (Though I hate reading on the ipod....it was worse than when I read my e-books on my NDS...)

I'm still getting used to the Calibre program, so any shortcuts or tricks you've picked up, please share!! As more things are going digital, we can't have enough info, imo. And I don't know about others, but I have a ton of fanfic on mine. and I'm sure people are going to want to know how to convert them for eReaders.

Calibre just happened to be the first conversion program I found when I was googling around and though it's a little complicated - okay, a lot complicated, but I don't use all the different levels and features so I'm able to keep it fairly simple.

If people don't want software that manages their e-library, there are a lot of other programs that will do format conversions and that's it. Once the conversion's complete, you just save the new file in whatever folder you've designated. Some programs have been mentioned in earlier posts and they're in the tags under e-readers.

I don't know if it's different in different countries but here in the UK I just tend to send them to my Kindle email address and Amazon then sends them wirelessly (and free!) to my Kindle. There is also the ability to send other formats beyond pdf and mobi but these they charge you for as they convert them for you to mobi.
