I can't recommend one--I find it hard to imagine that there are any others--so instead I'll recommend a similar story.

For the Love of Kai (http://www.midnightwhispers.ca/viewstory.php?sid=1124&warning=10) by Snow is an active WIP in which Justin and Brian rebuild their relationship while caring for Justin's young half-brother, Kai, who has autism. I like the care Snow has put into creating an accurate protrayal of Kai's autism and of Justin's frustrations trying to help him.

That story is amazing. I strongly recommend it. ;-)

Not too long ago I was curious about that as well, so I did some searching. While I found a title of a fanfic, it's my understanding that particular story is no longer posted. I attempted to contact that author about it, but I haven't received a response.

You can read it here (if you meant For the Love of Kai by Snow):

I really love this story and the interactions between Justin, Kai and Brian, most of all how patient and understanding Brian is.

I will. I'm hoping she's just been overly busy and unable to reply. Even if it's to say, 'I decided not to mess with that anymore' is better than no response period. I'm sure if it's like [livejournal.com profile] court1429 stated below, then that could be why the story was pulled in order to not have to deal with major protest. *shrugs*

It's always appropriate to post a link to a fic you're referencing because nearly always, if you don't, someone will ask for it. ;)

Just so you know, though, this particular fic caused a fuck ton of drama in fandom after it was posted and many authors removed their fics from MW and bjfic.net in protest when it was allowed to stay up on those archives, so there may be some who don't respond positively to this fic.

I know authors in all fandoms put characters in every situation under the sun and give them every disease and malady in the medical texts, but there are two very definite camps regarding this fic.

Some think it's fabulous and cite it as a favorite; others are horrified and think it crossed an inviolable line and turned Brian into a pedophile since Justin can't give actual consent. There were several people who have children or siblings who are autistic who were livid and hurt that anyone would write or champion a fic about crossing this boundary.

As mysid says, it's kinda hard to imagine other similar fic. There's one where Justin is mute (by choice, maybe? I've never read it), that might work for your request, but I don't know the title or author.

I think I can understand how people can react so strongly given that thought process. However, I have two family members that are autistic, one high functioning, the other more towards the non-verbal side of things. Does that mean that I would never want those two family members to ever fall in love? No, and I'm sure if they do it will be in their own way.

I think Daniel Tammet stated it best in Born on a Blue Day:

Falling in love is like nothing else; there isn't a right or a wrong way to fall in love with another person, no mathematical equation for love and the perfect relationship.

Sorry, I just thought it was interesting to read this response to the post.

The whole premise of the Brian/Justin story line is most definitely NOT based on illegal love and sex. Justin was 17-1/2, which is a minor as far as voting, getting married, getting drafted, being considered a legal adult, etc. goes, but he was over the age of consent for sex, which is 16 in Pennsylvania.

That 29 to 17 age difference still may be squicky to some, but it wasn't ever illegal and Justin was in no way coerced.

I absolutely support the right of people who have mental/emotional challenges to find love and get married or live however they choose in that love relationship.

My comment referred specifically to that fic and the serious eyebrow raising (at the least) that it engendered. To keep it about fic, jans_intentions wrote a fic about Brian suffering a brain injury. Justin moved back from NYC to Britin to care for him and he definitely has residual issues. They resumed, after awhile, their sexual relationship. That's a much different scenario, IMO, than Kiss Me All Right.

And people can write and read whatever they want, most definitely. I was just pointing out that some people equally strong opposing viewpoints on that fic. I've never heard of any other fic getting so much attention due to subject matter.

I've seen plenty of fanfic that caused major drama over the years, so I shouldn't have been as surprised as I was when I first read your comment. I've seen some pretty squicky things in fanfic, so hearing that reaction to an Autistic!Justin gave me a moment of 'what...' (I also remember hearing about that jans_intentions story.)

Prolly so. I've only ever been in this fandom so that was the first time I'd ever heard of a fic topic getting that much attention.

Squicks, like kinks, are very much a personal reaction, no different than preferences in taste or smell, IMO.

lol Nobody's getting kicked out. We don't censor people's requests, I just wanted you to know that this fic comes with a "history" of very strong feelings about it.

I, for one, love that fic. Being autistic doesn't mean being mentally impaired. Some of them have intellectually disabilities to some degree, but a lot of them are actually really smart, even smarter than the average for non autistic people.

The main problem with autism is the communication with the outside world. But they can learn to communicate nonetheless, specially if they are high functioning. And in this fic, Justin is completely capable to communicate his wants and needs, in his own personal way. And he wants Brian, and he needs to leave the hospital.

Why is it that 'normal' people think they can state who is allowed to fall in love and who isn't? Love is something that cannot be controled. Justin KNOWS what he wants in this story, and Brian reacts outstandingly to every situation.

I think 'Kiss Me Alright' is a beautiful story. A story that shows us an amazing inner world full of beauty and magic. A really lovely look into how an autistic mind could work.

There's a movie, 'Miracle Run', that shows two high functioning autistics and how they learn to communicate with the outside world. One of them even falls in love. Considering it's based in a real story, I think it shall be acurate enough, right? Watching that movie and reading 'Kiss Me Alright', I don't think there's such a difference between what's told in the fic and the real thing.

I can understand, however, why this fic caused such a reaction in the fandom. I understand why someone would think it's sick. But I stick to my opinion. ;-)

Again, I recommend the amazing 'For the Love of Kai'. It's a beautiful story. :-)

Greetings from Spain! ^^

As with any other fic, people can hold whatever opinion of it they choose. This one just comes with more baggage than any other QAF fic I've heard about.

I think you'd be hard pressed to find anyone in this fandom who doesn't support the right of a person to love and create a life with another person(s) irrespective of personal challenges.

About the right of a person to love whoever they want, I was referring specifically to this kind of situation as well as to people in general, not necessarily to people related to the fandom. It's obvious that people in this fandom are more open-minded than the general average. They kinda have to be that way, haven't they? lol

I was not attacking the fandom with my comment. I'm sorry if I made it seem as if I was doing that. :-S It's just that sometimes I can't make my point the way I would want to, since English isn't my native tongue.

I was just stating my opinion on this controversial subject, and of course, I absolutely respect everyone else's opinions too. I just wanted to state mine. :-)

Greetings from Spain!

No worries on your English at all. Many native speakers should be as clear as you are! ;) I kinda took your comment out of context because you're right; this fandom isn't going to have people lining up to deny others their rights.

Date: 2010-12-11 06:47 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] biku-desires.livejournal.com
lol Yeah, how hypocritical would this fandom be if people started diminishing other people's rights? ;-)

I'm sorry for the misunderstanding again, and thanks for your kind words regarding my English. ^^ I try very hard every day to improve my English. :-)

Talk to you soon!

I also completely fell in love with "Kiss Me Alright" and I found it fantastic.

I would really liked to read "Autistic Artist" but can't manage to find it anywhere. Any idea how or where to get it?

Btw, thanks for the rec' of 'For the love of Kay", it is a beautiful story!

I loved this fic! I thought it was done in a respectful and thought-provoking way.

I felt sorry for the author that people gave her such a hard time. I would think that, especially in QAF fandom, people wouldn't support censorship and would try to co-exist peacefully.

Anyway, good rec. I'm glad that more people might have a chance to read this creative and touching fic!

If people take issue with your reccing it, I hope they do what everyone should've done with the fic in the first place: If they don't like it, just move along!

Most people seem to think KMA is the only story of this type, but I distinctly remember another in which Justin had Autism, and worked for Brian at Kinnetik. He had an old blue sweater he always wore. It was unfinished and I don't think I've come across it in several years.

As far as drama goes, KMA is probably my favorite fic ever. I also have a sibling with cognitive disability and I'm very active in the disability community. While there's a few things about the fic I found a little politically incorrect from this standpoint, I think it's always wonderful for characters with disabilities to be portrayed with sexual autonomy and self-determination in their adult lives. Too often this community is infantilized, and I think there's actually a great lesson to take away from this story.

This also seems like a good opportunity to mention that if anyone in this fandom is an advocate for gay rights but still says "retard" in their day-to-day lives, then it's time to rethink some things.
