Into 5,083 posts, some wank must fall
Nov. 10th, 2010 03:45 pmWell, it's 5,082 posts now... :) Gotta say that today's now-deleted post is the first of its kind that we've ever seen in this community. And dickish as it was, one post out of 5000+ is not even a blip on the meter.
For those who didn't see the post and wonder what's up, someone who rounded up a bunch of fics that are no longer available for sharing in this community, decided she'd create a new username expressly to upload said fics to an individual 4Shared page and then posted the link here in the comm.
As we've said repeatedly, what anybody chooses to save to their own hard drive and share privately is not and cannot be any of our business, but *in this community*, we go by the rules that have been posted. There aren't many, but one rule that is if an author ever notifies the maintainers that they have pulled their fics and they ask specifically that sharing *within the comm* be disallowed, we will abide by that author's request.
So far, the only author who's done so is
jans_intentions.
niquita_gia is the author who notified us today of this now-deleted post and has made a similar request regarding her fic, which we will honor.
As far as Carly's "That Darn Gus" fic, no such request has been made. Apparently, she posted her fics to bjfic.net and they were made unavailable because that archive has been dead for over 18 months now and the current owner chooses not to release it for someone else to step up and maintain. But if the archive came back online, that fic and many others would be available once more.
This should answer any questions regarding the wee bit of drama that is now over and done with. Carry on reading and searching and being the awesome comm members that you all are!

Date: 2010-11-10 10:14 pm (UTC)Second, I'm sure she did mean to stir shit up. Her post clearly said (paraphrasing since it's been deleted) "fuck it. I know this is going to get deleted so grab'em while they're hot."
As you say, and as we've said repeated, whatever anyone chooses to save and share outside the community is totally your own business. We do not care at all. We just care about following the guidelines that have been in place for several years and keeping this community the friendly, generous, fun place it is.
She violated not only the letter of the comm, she violated the spirit of the comm. On purpose.

Date: 2010-11-11 12:15 am (UTC)When I saw it last night I had a good opportunity to snag some stories of hers but then I realized that *hey, she doesn't want those out*. So I stopped myself from doing it.
I respect when people when they take their stories down but if I pass on the story through PM then that's different. I hope I can trust the next person to not post them online.
Thanks Court for taking that post down. I now feel better that jans intentions stories are safe since they are now in book form.
*HUGS*

Date: 2010-11-11 12:24 am (UTC)I'm the same in tending to assume people have good motives, especially online when we can't hear or see someone, so I usually try to assume they meant well even if it comes off a little questionable. Like my comment did! Sounded all lecture-y and shit, which totally wasn't intended.
I've got to start watching Glee. Everyone I know adores it. Need to find the first season and start at the beginning.

Date: 2010-11-11 12:30 am (UTC)I brought S1 of Glee for my Paris as she LOVES it & it keeps her happy & out of my hair for hours at a time.
The best $60 I ever spent. But you must watch it from the beginning, then catch up with S2,,it's the best show I've watched since QaF ended & thats saying a lot from me, as TV bores the crap out of me.
later Jx

Date: 2010-11-11 01:09 am (UTC)I had an off line conversation with her regarding a typo, and she said that she wasn't planning on deleting them, but she wasn't going to go back and fix them either.

Date: 2010-11-11 01:53 am (UTC)As we've said here before, what people do outside the comm with regard to sharing fic is beyond our reach, and out of our control. I'm sure some people downloaded the fics while they were up. That's their business. The issue was someone coming in with the expressed intent to start shit. We're not having that. That person has been banned, as will anyone else that tries to pull a stunt like this again.
Sorry, it's been a long day, and your mods are cranky. Coffee...yes, coffee would be good now...and music. And porn.

Date: 2010-11-11 02:23 am (UTC)Is this the That Darn Gus fic? And if so, is there anywhere else to find it? I tried the mournthewicked journal link below but it says access denied. Now I'm more curious than ever to read these stories!

Date: 2010-11-11 02:49 am (UTC)Well, we have a difference of opinion on that front. Writing fanfiction, which is by definition based on characters you do not own and then removing those fics so the characters can be renamed and the stories then sold as original fiction for which an author is financially compensated seems ethically challenged at best, outright stealing at worst.
I am not saying Jan did this. I don't know because I have only read a couple of her fics and none of her books. But "they've been taken offline and she's asked they not be shared because she's reworking them into original fiction" is the reason everyone cites when anyone asks why her fic is unavailable.
My personal opinion, or anyone's personal opinion, doesn't matter, however, since the original maintainers of this community implemented the rule about not sharing in the community if an author so requests. That rule, and the fact that the original poster was so obviously trying to stir up drama, is why the post was deleted.

Date: 2010-11-11 02:57 am (UTC)Was that person just trying to incite a shitstorm or did they think they would get showered with gratitude?? 'Cause, yeah, a few people might get excited from a purely reader perspective. But they were flat out saying I don't care about these authors or the mods. Which was bound to piss off the general population, because 1) we love our mods; 2) several of us are or have been mods in other comms and therefore identify; 3) many of us are writers, and even if pulling my fic from fandom isn't something I'd ever do, it's certainly the author's right, and the general disrespect makes me want to go upside somebody's head.
Umm... do we know who this person is?

Date: 2010-11-11 03:16 am (UTC)In the case of someone like Jan, her fics were generally extremely AU to start with, so not really much to be stolen from Cowlip. I haven't read her books, but in taking a good look at what she's got on Amazon, I get the impression that she kept a couple of her stories fairly intact, blended multiple fics together in a few of them, and now is branching into more original stuff.
I've only seen one case of a book... think it was an ebook... where someone had "reworked" their fiction and it was still completely ridiculously obviously canon QAF. Can't remember who it was or what it was called now. I would have made an attempt to notify Cowlip so they could sue if I thought the person was going to make any money at all off it, but I really didn't.

Date: 2010-11-11 03:16 am (UTC)You were there, I think she was just there to start shit. People do that sometimes. Wouldn't surprise me if it was someone's sockpuppet. I couldn't get their IP, unfortunately.
What I loved, and appreciated, was that just about everyone stood up and said something, and fully backed out position. How often do you see that?
What people do with their fics is their business. I too wouldn't pull my fic unless it was for a good reason. And then I'd at least let people know so they could save it or whatever. Hell, use it for TP, I dunno. lol But when a writer comes to us and asks us to not share or allow their fic to be shared, we state that to the comm, and then we back that.
This is an awesome place with virtually zero wank. We wanna keep it that way, for the people that come here, and for our own peace of mind.
