I'm just wondering, does Brian ever call Justin "Sonnyboy" in the TV show? I know people write him saying it in fanfics all the time, but does he ever actually say it to Justin? If so, what episode?
He does, a few times. One I can think of in particular is S2, Ep.03 when Brian is watching Justin walk down the street by himself ("When My Boy Walks Down the Street" is playing), and Brian is murmuring to himself "Come on, sonny boy."
I'm fairly sure there are other examples, but that's the one that first came to my mind, having just watched it recently.
So far, the only other one I've found is S1, Ep.01, when he drops Justin off at school after their first night, he says "Here we are, sonny boy" - so there's at least one that's said directly between them. I can't access transcripts for the latter 3/4 of Season 3 or the second half of Season 5, so if there are any others in there, I'm not sure off the top of my head... Maybe there are just those two instances, though.
I can't think of any instance besides 2x03 either, and as you pointed out, even then he doesn't say it to Justin's face.
I think Sonny Boy simply tends to get mixed up a lot with the more frequently used Sunshine because people forget that the context of Brian using it is -- save for one, maybe a very few occasions -- Gus-exclusive?
I'm fairly sure there are other examples It would be great if you could think of those other scenes. I'll be happy to be proven wrong. :)
Brian calls Justin Sonny boy during the pilot, when they arrive in front of the school. I believe there is at least another occasion in which he calls him that, I think in S1 or S2, but right now it doesn't come to my mind when exactly.
I think in S4, the epi involving their naked fight scene B calls him that. Justin had finished slapping or hitting Brian egging him on, and Brian did a quick punch to Justin's nose, who then turned away. It was as he approached Justin, I thought he used SonnyBoy in his sentence.
In the beginning of S 2, don't remember what ep. after Melanie turns Lindsay down, Brian and Lindsay are talking while making the swing set for Gus and he says he has two sons. I think he might be refering to Justin here. If not. Say.
As far as I can remember, Brian gives Justin this name at the beginning of season 2, during that scene in the street, where Justin is trying to make his way through the crowd on his own. Brian (who is wearing sunglasses) iswatching him over a few feet away from him and says something like "that's right, sonnyboy" or "you're doing fine sonnyboy"
He doesn't 'give' Justin the name, he merely says it. In 101, when he drops Justin off at school, he says, "Here we are, Sonnyboy", and again in 203 in the "When My Boy Walks Down The Street" scene, he holds out his arms and says, "Come on, Sonnyboy", although Justin doesn't hear him.
