does anyone remember a fic in which Justin has prostate cancer? I don't remember if it was an alternative to the cancer arc in S4 or not, though.
Sound familiar?
ETA: Found. Link in comments. Thanks for all of the help! :)

Date: 2009-04-26 09:25 pm (UTC)And there are certainly differences in spelling, grammar, and slang between the US and the UK/Australia (and even Canada regarding the spelling of certain words, though the added "u" in color, honor, etc. is one of the easier infractions for me to overlook).
It is one of my *biggest* peeves (and I assure you I'm not alone in this! lol) that non-US writers don't bother to have an American beta their fics for non-standard American usage. It's a really fast way to knock a reader out of the story, IMO, and could easily be corrected.
I'd feel the same way if I read HP or Merlin or Torchwood fics (I think those are all British, right?) that were heavy with American slang and spelling. It's incumbent on the author to be as true to the canon universe as possible if s/he's really interested in writing good IC fic and part of that includes, IMO, being accurate as to place, which means correctly using spelling, idiom, expressions, etc., from the canon universe.
Not that this has anything at all to do with fic searches, of course! ;)
edited to correct my own grammar error of it's to its; possession and plural errors being yet another peeve along with the seeming unawareness that commas go before and after proper names. But that's neither here nor there. Except it so totally is... ahem. ;D

Pronunciation [awl-rahyt]
–adverb
all right.
Usage note:
The form alright as a one-word spelling of the phrase all right in all of its senses probably arose by analogy with such words as already and altogether. Although alright is a common spelling in written dialogue and in other types of informal writing, all right is used in more formal, edited writing.
It just sounds as if it's an incorrect contraction of the phrase "all right" rather than a proper usage.
I have to admit that misplaced commas are one of my biggest pet peeves. Well, that and irregardless. I can't help but cringe when someone says it, and I find it difficult to not correct them.
ETA: Had to delete the other comment since I couldn't find the button to let me edit the extra "f" from "of". *face palm*

Date: 2009-04-26 10:14 pm (UTC)The comma thing? I am astounded how many people don't know comma usage, especially around proper names and as punctuation within dialogue. I swear I could fill a page with usages and errors that irk me! Join me? ;)

Date: 2009-04-27 01:34 am (UTC)Court, you are as bad as I am. If I'm reading a story about Brian and Justin, and they're riding up to the loft in a "lift", it drives me insane.
Oh, and Brian would never say "bloody" or "bugger", although he might if he were fucking a Brit. lol Just to be an asshole, you know.
SID!!!! Where you been??? *tackles*

It's just been crazy at work. We've been working under a lot of court deadlines and whatnot. Last Friday we filed a Complaint and filed the Amended Complaint on the following Monday, and it was all for one case. I hate litigation, I really do. I almost hate it as much as real estate (but I hate r/e mostly due to the fact I have to deal with R, the attorney, and the bankers, buyers, sellers, agents, etc.)
I think I need a new pair of shoes or something. :)

And a pair of shoes. *nods*

Plus, it's friggin cute. ;-)
Ooooh, perfect peen!!! Let's have a perfect sex scene to go with it.

Date: 2009-04-27 01:44 am (UTC)I've also discovered a new peeve. It started when I was shoved into doing real estate(along with everything else at the office). I can't stand it any longer to see the typical "fic closing" in which Brian and/or Justin show up at the real estate agent's office and just pick up the keys - as if that's all that needs to be done. *headdesk* It drives me crazy. I will admit, however, that it's a strange pet peeve. :)

Date: 2009-04-27 05:33 am (UTC)It's funny, though, isn't it, what all takes us out of a fic? There's one fic I really like (though damned if I think what it is right this second, and not that it matters) and there's a section where Debbie's in *the* hospital (because we're Americans, don'tcha know, and we put an article before the noun in certain instances. ahem.) and may be dying. They are living in NYC at this time and catch the first flight out but don't make it to Debbie's hospital room until after 3:30 p.m., and she'd died just a few minutes before. Talk about pulling me out of the story! They coulda driven in less time! The flight from NYC to the Pitts is around an hour and a half. Even with a delay and having to rent a car, instead of just grabbing the first cab the saw to hurry on to the hospital, there's just no way they wouldn't have arrived by mid-morning. I mean, fine, kill off Debbie before they have a chance to see her, but do it earlier in the day so I can read this really good fic without getting all perturbed about this easily corrected timeline issue! So, no, you finding that wrong real estate closing timelines irritate you seems perfectly reasonable to me. ;DDD
