Novel References

I read the three official QAF novels that give the Brian & Mikey back story last week. Although far from perfect, they weren't bad. I was wondering if there are any fics where characters from the novels make a reappearance. If you haven't read the books, some names that might come up are:

Book 1: Gary Palmer, the gym teacher.
Book 2: Jason Lauren, Brian's college pal.
Book 3: Evan Steele, Brian's boss at his first advertising job.

I'd recommend the second one, the first one was okay, but the third one wasn't terribly good, in my opinion.

The "novels" (and I use that term loosely) are not canon.
From what I've heard CowLip disavows them and the actors
hate them (they have refused to autograph them in the past).
I also have never read a single fic that referenced anything
in any of the books, which tells me more than anything that
they aren't really "QAF" -- unless there are B/M-shippers
somewhere who are incorporating them into fics -- B&J writers
certainly are not, since almost everything in the books is
contradicted by material in the shows.

The first two books are actually pretty much canon. There's a little snafu where Michael gave Brian the cowry shell bracelet, but they're otherwise not factually contradictory. I thought Brian's college years were actually very well done in the second book.

The third book I found a bit questionable. There was an almost relationship between Brian and his boss that just didn't seem in character and misc other things that didn't quite fit with the canon.

None of them are B/M books. Michael has his crush, but Brian is clearly not interested. It's not B/J, because Justin is a toddler, but it isn't anti-B/J.

Cowlip and the actors probably have some definite ideas about the backstory that never came up in the show which the novelist contradicted--undoubtedly much better stuff than what was in the novels. They may also feel that the QAF story is stronger when the background is a bit mysterious.

But the books aren't bad. Just based on what was on screen the first two books are perfectly plausible and although the third is a bit iffy it's not directly contradictory. If someone wants backstory, in the absense of anything better, I'd recommend the first two.

Just about any decent fanfic is better, IMO.

Justin "meeting" Brian as a little boy while he
"clutches" his teddy bear, Gus? The "prom" rewritten
as a B/M moment? Gag.

I have to say I purchases and read all 3 of the QAF books during the run of QAF and they were to first QAF fic stuff I read. I started reading QAF fan fic after those 3 books so I have to say they pulled me into QAF fan fic.

I thought just as most fics, they were good to give some background even is not truly so for the show. But then again all the fan fics we read every day is not true to the background of the show but just an idea of how it might have been. Does that make sense?

I still remember the meeting between Jennifer/Justin/Brian when Justin was a little boy and Justin's bear called "GUS" the way I feel about the books is this. they were my pull into QAF fan fic and unlike all of us QAF fan fic writers, THE ONES WHO WROTE AND PUBLISHED THOSE 3 BOOKS ACTUALLY MADE MONEY DOING IT!!!!! Who would have thought it!!!!! LOL

I read they books and thought they were fun. It was just like reading any other piece of fanfiction, you either liked it or you didn't. CowLip's opinion never mattered to me. It's all for fun, right?

Anyway, I know I recently read a fic with Evan Steele coming back to get revenge on Brian and dragging Justin into it. It was a WIP, I think. I'll have to go look for it for you.

I can't say as I've read anything that had Jason Lauren in it.

I'm not having any luck finding the fic with Evan Steele in it, but I know I read it not too long ago. Brian loses a few accounts and a few things start going wrong for Justin at art show. Brian gets suspicious and discovers that Evan Steele is back in town. Evan wants Brian to work for him, but Brian says no since he now owns his own agency. Evan tries to blackmail him instead and this nice little war begins between Kinnetik and Evan's agency. Evan tried to use Justin against Brian by messing with Justin's career, too. There was an original character that was a female headhunter.

This may have fallen prey to the MW crash. I thought it was a WIP, but I could be wrong. I just wish I could find the darn thing!

It's a Ficticious Season Six/Sixth Season, I think by CleverDevil or something, which was on midnight whispers before they had to move sites. No idea if it's up at the new one :)
