I read this fic ages ago but I can only remember one bit in it. Gus and JR are all grown up and JR says something about how her dad can't afford to buy her a brand new car for her 16th birthday the way Gus's dad did.... does this ring any bells?

I think that's from allie_quixotic's epic How We Got Where We're Going (http://allie-quixotic.livejournal.com/23650.html#cutid1). Gus was in a really bad car accident and has PTSD. He and JR still live in Toronto with their moms, but Gus goes to NYC to stay with Brian and Justin for awhile.
