Hello guys!

I've read reams of QAF fic, and you know how the same phrases keep cropping up ... like "he let out a breath he didn't know he was holding" or "they only stopped kissing when the need for oxygen became too great"... not to mention Justin's ass "gripping like a velvet vise"!

I know Justin's "shell-like ear" came from the episode where Linds and Mel were trying to choose a father for Mel's baby, but how about the term "Temmett"? I don't remember it being canon, so does anyone know who originated it? I guess these phrases came from fics that had a great influence on later writers, and I just wondered if anyone knows which they were?

Got any favourites of your own?

It's not canon. And I don't know where it came from. I guess someone may have used it in a fic, but why!? It sounds...stupid. Sorry.

Oh, no, it's fine! It's just...Temmet!?! *shudders*

And yeah, there are times when you can read a fic and know who wrote it by their 'tells'. There's a writer in HP fandom that I can pick out of any anon fest because she makes the same SpaG error every single time.

Oh, and the "kissing until the need for air arose" thing? [livejournal.com profile] vamphile wrote a fic about that called Mouth Breathers, IIRC. It's about that very thing. It's hysterical.

Lol, I tend to think use of "Temmett" in fic works when it's Brian kind of eye-rollingly referring to them in his head, how sickeningly couple-y they were. But the whole couple portmanteau thing didn't become universally popular (used not just by fans but by news media and general public) until well past Ted and Em's break-up. Probably, the days of Brangelina, around 2005. I'm pretty sure it was the baby of daytime soap fandom. I think we started squishing names around 2000. Before that, it was always just initials.

I don't think your first two are just QAF only, as I've seen it in many different fandoms in over a decade. I'm not sure who initially started it, but it seems to be a common thing. (I've been told the second one can be found in romance novels as well...) It makes me giggle and question the amount of suction is involved in their kissing. :D

I always assumed that Temmett was started from one person and it spread, it reminds me of a 'pairing' name, when they would combine names of characters instead of listing them separately.

Temmett definitely sounds like a pairing name made up by the fandom or an author. Maybe the author even used in their fic. Maybe in a scene like the one were Justin comes up with "Britin".

As for the other lines... I'm pretty sure I've used them myself and don't them all that much. There are "worse" lines to be used in fics or general in writing. My personal pet-peeve is "weaping cock" and variations thereof.

I just saw a weeping cock in a fic the other day! Poor sad cock. It either needs a hug or medical attention.

I really felt bad for that cock. It seemed so distressed in the situation...

Have you been to this comm? [livejournal.com profile] weepingcock Dedicated to bad sex in both fanfiction and published fiction. Hilarious and often disturbing, lol :)

And the bad sex excerpts inspire me to make ridiculous icons.

Yeah, I've seen the comm though I feel too bad for the authors to browse or post there.

Oh, okay. You are a better person than I! :)

A lot of what gets posted there is on purpose bad. And a majority of what's written seriously is so misogynistic that I could have no qualms about sporking it.

In this fandom, the phrase that always makes me cringe is references to Brian as "the older man" -- mostly because you just know how much Brian would hate said writer for pointing that out. ;)

In some fandoms when a certain pairing is shipped they meld the names into one. I am assuming this is a version of Ted/Emmett. Other fandoms you get - Brendan/Ste as Stendan, Christian/Syed as Chryed, Christian/Oliver as Chrolli... etc. I am sure the list of these is endless. But, just where I think 'Temmett' must have spawned from. Not one I intend to use in any of my fics, though. =)

And I wonder is it Temmet 'sit' or 'sits', 'is reading' or 'are reading'? Sounds like Siamese twins.

Lol. It does. Not a road I plan to go down! =)

They both are gorgeous, why blend them? *shrugs*

I guess they blend them to showcase their favorite pairing. I'm not sure. =)

Yikes! The use of stock terms is exactly why I can't read QAF sex scenes anymore. Who knew that sex between two beautiful men could be reduced, time and time and time again, to a dozen or so painfully over-familiar cliches? It's the quickest way to bring an otherwise-great fic to a sudden halt.

Now, as soon as any part of either character 'jumps' or 'twitches', especially if accompanied by a 'hungry' or 'lustful gaze', I go into fast-forward mode.

They bother me a lot less . . . now that I don't read them. ;-)

Lol. I hate it, when Brian has to have Justin NOW. Not that I ever read one, but that sounds very romance novel with Fabio on cover to me. ;)

And if 'Baby' as term of endearment is used I'm out at once. Disturbing.

Brian's use of 'Baby', and other terms of endearment, doesn't bother me at all. I always got the impression that he could easily fall into that type of behavior -- if he'd been allowed to heal enough to peel off the protective "I don't do..." mask.

It isn't the use of an endearment that disturbs me. What disturbs me is stuff like 'He pulled out of his baby.' Call me old-fashioned, but that kills it for me.

YES. THIS. A MILLION TIMES THIS.

Oh, I can definitely agree with that! I also hate sex-talk combined with the phrases "his boy" or "his beautiful boy".

Blech!

I think most of the ones you mention aren't so much QaF-fandom cliches as they are bad-erotica cliches. If you want to find the first uses of them, we'd probably have to look through the "Letters" secions of porn mags.

And I agree with the poster above who said that "Temmett" originated post-"Brangelina" and the that ilk. For a while there, NO well-known couple seemed able to escape being given a conjoined name.

I'd like to know who first decided that Brian's middle name is "Aidan". It's become pretty widespread in fanon since then.

Waiiiiiiit....if his middle name is not Aidan, then WTF is??? LAUGHS HYSTERICALLY CUZ WAS SURE THAT WAS HIS MIDDLE NAME IN THE SHOW.

It's canon that his middle initial is "A.", but we don't know what it stands for.
