Wow, that's great news! Maybe we can hope for a new portion of fans and new wonderful stories soon :)

I *may* delete or ask you to, but I figure it can stay up a day or so to let some people see it.

Do you know if the episodes have the actual original music? Just curious. I would hope so, since it's on Showtime. I just know my friend told me watching QAF on Netflix is traumatizing because all the songs are wrong.

Nope, it's the "new" music. There's a tweet from Scott about that on my LJ. It sucks! :(

Ugh :(

I just told freakykat about this and she is over here having flashbacks to watching with the wrong music on Netflix, blanket over her head going "no, no, no, no" lol.

I guess for the most part it will be fine for the brand new viewers who don't know what they missed music-wise. But if they choose to read fanfic they might be confused sometimes - SO many fics specifically reference "Save The Last Dance For Me"!

I understand why they couldn't maintain the original music, but it makes such a huge difference that I've been waging a one-woman campaign on Twitter to let new fans know. I mention an episode and a particular song, like "Let's Hear it for The Boy," hoping people will notice. I've also been encouraging people who really like the show to buy the DVDs, not the digital downloads. :)

Watching with the wrong music is horrible, because the replacement stuff is like elevator music: insipid, uninspiring, awful. However, I don't want to be mad at Showtime, because it wasn't really their fault.

I can't be 100% sure, but I think the music on the DVDs is the original music. I'm sure enough, in fact, that I just bought the first three seasons off Amazon. I'll update people on my journal once they arrive.

& how can u tell??

And, if anyone knows... is there any way of telling on the package or label before purchasing a dvd set??

ETA: sidenote (further off topic)... I've been unable to get the Princess of Babylon site (@ sidebar) for about a month now?? It's always the same. It just loads for a long time then says, "can't open because the server stopped responding." Is it just me??

There's no way to tell from the package or label that I know of. However, I've noted these things:

- No one has mentioned that they bought the DVDs and it was the new music.
- The issue that prompted new music had to do with music licensing for streaming content. DVDs aren't streaming content, but can only be played on your computer or DVD player. The original music episodes are the ones on Netflix (streaming), digital copies (streaming), and Showtime (streaming because subscribers can watch SHO on their phone, iPad, etc.) So to me that says the DVDs are still okay.

I've just bought 3 seasons of the DVDs and will let people know on my journal once I get them. :)

You mean "new" there, right? (Just to avoid confusion!)

I have the complete series on DVD and I know mine has the original music. Of course I got it several years ago, maybe 2009 or so. But I haven't heard about the DVDs being rereleased recently, so it should be the same.

Looks like I will have to let this post stay up! It's become an educational conversation lol.

Thank you! I'll update that!

I agree about the DVDs being the same ones. No new packaging and on Amazon, at least, they are listed under a separate category rather than all formats being listed under each season, which is the norm.

Yikes, I mean the new music episodes are the ones on Netflix, etc. New, folks, not original. :)

iTunes

Okay... so people who already have Netflix and Showtime are getting the new and (what's the opposite of improved?) soundtrack. It sucks. I've commented on a couple of boards about it since April. (I was under the belief that it was the fault of the show's producers... admittedly, my lingering bitterness over season 5 may have slightly colored my overall opinion of Cowlip. Now it's coming out that CBS is to blame. This makes more sense.)

But the folks watching it on Netflix and Showtime aren't paying any more for those services than they already do to watch QAF. Here's the thing that has me most bothered: Queer As Folk has been released for sale on iTunes. For about $140 you can buy all 5 seasons. But guess what? It counts as streaming so it has the new music. What's worse? There is no disclaimer stating that you are about to spend money for that crap!!

Honestly, I'm thinking CBS won't come near their projected earnings for this re-release. I hope this wasn't going to be their gauge to determining whether or not to air a 10 year anniversary special... movie or season 6 or whatever.

Is any of the music on Netflix/Showtime from the original run? Or has it ALL been replaced?

Occasionally you'll find one. While searching for dialogue in a specific scene I did notice that "High School Confidential" is playing for Justin at the King of Babylon contest. Finding that was pretty random and I haven't subjected myself to much of the series on Netflix... but it's faster to locate a scene there than to pull out my DVDs and search episodes when I need it for research. (One of these days I'll figure out how to save my DVDs to my hard drive) For all I know, that song could be the only one left from the original. But I'll likely never know.
