Recs: Completely New to Fandom

Hey guys!

I've been watching QAF off and on for about a year now, and am through to 3x09. I'd been keeping away from fanfic for fear of spoilers, but I'm kind of itching for some  Brian/Justin, so I thought "screw it".

With that said, I haven't read any fic in the fandom, so I'm not sure what the general flow of it tends to be... I suppose I'll just list a few things I like, and hope that some of you kind people may know fics that fit one or more of those categories.

1) Long. I mean Looooooongg. 30K+ is always good, but I could go for a 100K, 200K word story. (Of course, if I hate something about the plot, then even the length couldn't salvage it for me.)

2) Sex. I realize this makes me sound like a perv, but what I really mean is: it would be nice if the author wrote about sex at least once, and didn't just plot around it. (Again, I haven't read any QAF fics, and I'm sure that given the material of the show, most writers will have some sex...but I just wanted to put it out there.) And never let it be said that I don't like kinky sex scenes...so, um recommend those epic stories with random bits of pwp!

3) Jealousy. I'm a sucker for good old-fashioned jealousy.

4) Despite the above two requirements, I'm still always up for a candy-floss sweet story. And I do love humour, no matter how small the quantity. 

5) AUs might be good, considering I'm still stuck in the Season 3 timeline. Perhaps that might be the way to go for me if I want to avoid spoilers.

I hope that wasn't overly long or demanding. *is sheepish*

Hi. You will notice on the right side there are Tags and Memories. Just go there and you will find all kinds. There are also sites (archives) where people post their stories.

Yeah, check the tags and memories. There is a tag for jealousy, AU, humour and sex, like the three some and so one tag and other ones too. These are just from my memory so there's a lot more.

And just to let you know. I usually have hard time finding a fic where there ISN't sex so people on this fandom are not shy!

I have to second looking through the tags and memories. The mods here are wonderful at keeping everything up to date and very manageable. Once you find a story or author you like, try going to their LJ page and see if they've got other stories that interest you. Then friend them to access the fics. That's what I did and it opened up a lot of great works to me.

A good one to try out first fits probably all of your requirements.It 's in four parts,the first one being Mirror.You have to go to http://community.livejournal.com/beyond_besame/ and friend her first to read her fics.They are absolutely great and a good place to start reading fan fiction.

You can also check out Midnight Whispers, there are many long fics there and if you go there you can look things up by category etc. Also check out Cynical21's Timeless. Or Indigo56 "Why Not With Me" They're both a little angsty but well written to be sure.

amelialourdes put together an excellent rec list (http://community.livejournal.com/getithere/tag/recs:%20amelialourdes%27%20lists) some time ago. It has classics, novel-length fics, you name it. Again, check out Queer Eyes (link on the right), it hosts the best fic in fandom. I'd go here first before checking other archives. It'll give you a better idea between 'quality' fic and...yeah.

When I fist got to fandom, I read just about any kind. BAD IDEA. I did learn very quickly the difference between good, crack and palin old bad!fic. I suspect you will, too.

Welcome! I would suggest, first, mainlining the rest of the episodes. There are so many fics that will completely spoil you.

The suggestions for the TAGS and MEMORIES categories are good for topic searches. Queer Eyes is an excellent archive. amelialourdes's rec lists are very good (in the TAGS under personal rec lists), Flame's Gapfiller list is good (linked on the Sidebar). And whoever said find a good author and then check their LJ or IJ is spot on. I roamed LJ and followed links to fic sites, saving links on a Word doc for about a month before I ever read hardly anything. I knew there was no way I'd remember where I'd been if I didn't save as I surfed!

I would also encourage you to check out the links on the Sidebar for Reading Comms. Some of them go to comms here on LJ; others are on IJ. You'll find tons of stuff to read there. Retread is a really good rec comm.

The only problem with a lot of these is there may be broken links due to archives going down. If you find broken links, come check the download links on the Sidebar or ask if someone's got the fic to share via email. There aren't many that can't be found somehow.

When I first got into the QaF fandom, one of the first fics recommended to me was Omelet (http://www.rhiannonhero.net/rhi/QueerAsFolk/omelet.html) by Rhiannonhero, and it is still one of my very favorites. It's not looong, but it's long enough to get your teeth into. I double-checked, and it's canon through S3 Ep.9, and AU from that point on, so no spoilers for you.

I really, really recommend it. I've been hooked on Brian/Justin ever since I read it.

I cannot say that I know more than these people commenting to you. It is just that most of the fanfics that I enjoyed tend to be written by people on LJ and most of them locked their posts if not their journals.

Also, kink is par for the course in this fandom. ;-)

The writers that I would rec is laylafic and xie_xie_xie. Also equally enjoyable are fics by plumsuede, mmmorpheusq and rhihero_fic. Check out severina2001 and although she left the fandom ages ago, myrna1_2_3. May be if you asked, people can tell you where myrna's fics are kept. I find hers long and enjoyable.

I envy you the joy of experiencing the world of QaF fanfic.
