You're right. There is a story where they go to Vermont and Gus takes a friend. They get caught in an avalanche and Justin saves Gus, but gets swept away. He floats down a river and lands where a pregnant woman finds him and because of the snow and remote location they cannot get out. But darned if I can remember the title or author.
