Slip Away by Branwen777

I've looked at a few posts in community and a few people said they have it, but the posts were from a year or two ago and most of the accounts haven't had any activity. If anyone has it (I think there were only 5 chapters) I WOULD BE SO GRATEFUL IF YOU SHARED IT WITH ME! I will gladly PM my e-mail to you :)

FOUND! Lots of thanks to ipitydafool ^-^

Wow, thanks for the fast answer and great advice. I think I want the Nook with the light, though I need to check out all the eReaders in person to check their weight (carpal tunnel sucks). I've read a lot of Nook vs. Kindle discussion but really, it all remains Greek to me, and the main thing I want is to be able to easily transfer fics. I also cannot decide about all the versions and options available. Sigh. I appreciate your help - truly, I was smart when young, but oldness has made me stupid!

Nook

I was quickly running through here but had to comment. I have years of experience with the Amazon kindle and now have a Kindle touch that I have had more problems than the previous version. I also have the new Nook HD and the previous 16G version (my husband is a tech geek). Please check them out for yourself, but my opinion is the new Nook HD is the best out there. It is more of a tablet/e-Reader. It does not disappoint. If you only want an e-Reader, the Nook touch is better than the Amazon. It is much easier and performs much better. I only had the Amazon for the touch-to-speech which was so not worth it in the end.

As far as "Calibre", it was rec'd to me by Ladyfantasia? (I'm sorry. I'm terrible with names). She also rec'd "Fanfictiondownloader". THE TWO WORK TOGETHER LIKE MAGIC. I can go to a site like "Midnightwhispers" and pick a favorite author, copy the webpage, click the "FanfictionDownloader" plug in "Calibre" and click the 'Get story from Web Page' in the drop box, paste the web page URLs and hit 'OK'. A box with all the stories from that web page will apppear. You click 'Copy to clipboard', the box will disappear and then you click the "FanfictionDownloader" again and click 'Add New from URL(s)'. A box will appear with all of the web pages of the stories, you click 'OK' and all of the stories download.

These instructions look long but this happens in less time than you think and once you do it the first time, you realize how easy it is. This has allowed me download multiple stories at a time although you can do one at a time. The stories come with summaries and tags which save me a sh.. load of time. And they look so professional and pretty.

Now here's another thing I (I'm married to a geek; what do you expect?) I don't have to download the stories to my Nook tablet because you have the Connect and Share plug. Once you have that set up correctly, Calibre is accessed through the web on your nook. MAGIC!

OK, I'm going to sleep now. :)

PS: Darn, I forgot. When you download as I suggested, Calibre automatically converts the fics to epub, which is a better format than pdf.

Wow, thanks for all this info. I'm copying to my Word docs so I can re-read it about 100 times - until I actually follow the steps for myself, it's a bit overwhelming. I think all I need is the reader function, but now I'm not sure. I really appreciate all this great information!!!

You're welcome. I'm not tech savy at all AND I'm old, so if I can do it...

Speaking of tech savy, I don't know all the lingo either, but when I wrote copy "web page", I meant the web address or URL ie: http://www.midnightwhispers.ca/viewuser.php?uid=918

Also, FanfictionDownloader.com is free. And the Nook 7" HD is very lightweight. Even my 72 year mother was impressed with it.

I have a 2nd Gen Kindle, the one with the keyboard and toggle switch. I love my Kindle!!!!

I use Calibre to convert everything. I've found that it's easier to convert from PDFs and webpages. For some reason, Calibre doesn't want to convert my Word docs. I've downloaded the FFD and can't get it to convert anything. I've tried from HP Fandom net, The Hex Files, and nothing. Maybe it's because the program knows I abhor FFN. lol I'll try your instructions and see if I can get it to work. Wish me luck!

"I have a 2nd Gen Kindle..."

I had that too. I swore you would have to pry it from my cold deads hands to get it away from me. I thought my husband was a nut, bragging about his Nook. It took my disappointment with having to return the Kindle multiple times because it kept fizzing out on me (I'm an avid reader), before I tried the Nook. I have not had a problem with it.

I didn't know you could use Calibre with the Kindle. I use to see my word docs through my email with freekindle.com. The kindle doesn't read epub that I know of.

"For some reason, Calibre doesn't want to convert my Word docs."

Calibre does not recognize word doc. It recognizes pdf and epub.

Also...re-reading your instructions for using the FFD and Calibre at the same time...I'm confused. Basically this part-

So, I open FFD AND Calibre at the same time? Talk to me like I'm a techtard (cause I really am til I get it down).

"So, I open FFD AND Calibre at the same time? Talk to me like I'm a techtard (cause I really am til I get it down)."

Honey, no one can be more of a techard than me. Just ask my husband. And yet, I figured this out when he couldn’t. I had the two separate, initially. I use to just copy a story webpage and it would automatically appear in Fanfictiondownloder but it was cumbersome because you had to place it in a folder and then download to Calibre. Using the plugin is much better. I’ll go step by step.

1. If you already have Calibre, go to "Preferences" ( click the arrows to the right at the top of Calibre and Preferences should show if not there already).

2. Click "Get plugins to enhance Calibre" (you must click that little arrow to the right of Preferences to get the drop box).

3. Click the fanfictiondownloader plugin from the list. The website -- http://code.google.com/p/fanficdownloader/wiki/FanFictionDownloaderCalibrePlugin:
Also explains it nicely from there. Once you have it installed, you can download 1 or more stories from their webpages at a time.

DOWNLOADING USING THE FANFICTIONDOWNLOADER PLUGIN IN CALIBRE

1. Choose a story from Midnight Whispers, FF.net, Twilighted, or Ao3. These are the sites that are compatible that I know of. Let’s choose Sapphire’s Pride and Punishment.

2. Click on the title of the story to get to the story’s webpage.

3. Copy the address at the very top of the page. You should get this: http://www.midnightwhispers.ca/viewstory.php?sid=2581 in highlight.

4. Go the Calibre and click the fanfictiondownloader plugin arrow to open the drop box.

5. Click the first choice which should say “+ Add New from URL(s)”. The address should automatically appear, if not – paste it.

6. Click “OK “at bottom of box (it may ask you confirm if your 18).

7. It should download and show up at top of list in Calibre. When you click on it you will get the banner, summary, and tags showing on the side. It’s a thing of beauty.

HOW TO DOWNLOAD AN ENTIRE WEBPAGE OF STORIES:

1. Choose an author. I’ll use Sapphire again. Go to her web page which will list all of her stories and copy the web page at the top (the author may have multiple pages of stories and you will have to repeat all the steps for each page). This is what you should get: http://www.midnightwhispers.ca/viewuser.php?uid=73

2. Go to Calibre and open the FanFictionDownloader plugin.

3. Click on “Get Story URLs from Web page”.

4. Click OK when the box appears with the web address.

5. Another box will open and all of the URLs of the stories on that web page should be listed.

6. Click “copy to clipboard”. Then OK. The box will disappear.

7. Go back to FanFictionDownloader plugin again.

Click on “ +Add New From URL(s)”. A box will appear with all the URLs listed inside again:

Click OK.

You have just downloaded all the stories from that webpage.

MAGIC!

I may have been a little too detailed or not enough. I hope this helps.
